In Situ hydrochar regulates Cu fate and speciation: Insights into transformation mechanism

Hugang Li et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that Cu- cysteine complexes and Cu2S were the main components of Cu in wastewater algae, while CuS was the predominant form in 220°C-hydrochar. Model compound experiments showed that Cu- cysteine could be converted into CuS, while Cu2S was stable during hydrothermal liquefaction. The positive Gibbs free energy indicated that the oxidation from Cu+ to Cu2+ cannot occur spontaneously. Cyclic voltammograms showed that hydrochar facilitated the oxidation of Cu2S due to its higher capability of electron acceptance.

Wet organic waste treatment via hydrothermal processing: A critical review

Mojtaba Hedayati Marzbali et al.

Summary: This paper reviews recent literature on hydrothermal carbonization, liquefaction and supercritical water gasification of lignocellulosic biomass and algae, as well as the production and applications of hydrochar, bio-oil, and synthesis gas. It also critically examines the comprehensive review of hydrothermal treatment for wet wastes, including municipal solid waste, food waste, sewage sludge, and algae, while establishing a comparison of different treatment options. Additionally, the study delves into the role of catalysts and the synthesis of catalysts using hydrothermal treatment of biomass, and summarizes findings on modeling works and techno-economic assessments in this area for the first time.

Hydrothermal liquefaction accelerates the toxicity and solubility of arsenic in biowaste

Hugang Li et al.

Summary: Arsenic is a highly toxic metalloid that can migrate from microalgae to the liquid phase during hydrothermal liquefaction, with a majority existing as As(V) and As(III). Model experiments show that a significant portion of As(V) in feedstocks can unexpectedly convert into more toxic As(III), potentially due to the presence of oxygen-containing groups. The aqueous phase plays a role in facilitating the reduction reaction of As(V) to As(III) by providing a reducing environment and hydrogen donation.

A review on key design and operational parameters to optimize and develop hydrothermal liquefaction of biomass for biorefinery applications

Ibrahim Alper Basar et al.

Summary: The increase in environmental awareness has led to a shift towards renewable energy sources and waste valorization technologies. Among these, biomass conversion and biofuels, especially through hydrothermal liquefaction, have gained significant attention for their potential in existing infrastructure. However, there are still gaps in optimization, reactor design, and catalyst effects that require further exploration. This review summarizes the current state and importance of hydrothermal liquefaction, providing a reference point for future research in the field.
