Do trace metal(loid)s in road soils pose health risks to tourists? A case of a highly-visited national park in China

Jingling Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the pollution levels, potential sources, and health risks of trace metal(loid)s in road soils in Huangshan National Park, Southeast China. The results show that mercury and cadmium are significant pollutants with moderate to high ecological risk. Traffic, industrial, agricultural, and natural sources contribute to the presence of trace metal(loid)s, with traffic being the largest contributor. Ingestion is the most important exposure pathway for children. Traffic and industrial sources have a significant impact on health risks.

Bioaccessibility, source impact and probabilistic health risk of the toxic metals in PM2.5 based on lung fluids test and Monte Carlo simulations

Jianwei Liu et al.

Summary: The bioaccessibility of soluble toxic metals in PM2.5 was determined using simulated lung fluids, showing higher bioaccessibility in ALF compared to GS, especially for Cd and Pb. Positive matrix factorization identified five TM sources, revealing a significant correlation between resuspended dust and coal combustion with the bioaccessibility of some TMs. Monte Carlo simulations estimated noncancer and cancer risks of soluble TMs, indicating potential risks for As and most TMs due to their high probability of exceeding safety thresholds.

Spatial-temporal characteristics, source-specific variation and uncertainty analysis of health risks associated with heavy metals in road dust in Beijing, China

Cong Men et al.

Summary: This study systematically analyzed the levels and main sources of health risks associated with ten heavy metals in road dust samples collected from Beijing. It found that Cr and Ni posed cautionary carcinogenic risks to children, while fuel combustion posed cautionary risks in all seasons. Heavy metal concentrations, ingestion rate, and skin adherence factor were the most influential variables for uncertainties in health risk assessment.

Health risk assessment of heavy metal(loid)s in park soils of the largest megacity in China by using Monte Carlo simulation coupled with Positive matrix factorization model

Jingling Huang et al.

Summary: The study found that mercury, cadmium, and lead were the main heavy metals in Shanghai urban parks, posing higher ecological risks, with health risks mainly coming from industrial production and traffic emissions. Although non-carcinogenic risks can be neglected, the total carcinogenic risk cannot be ignored, with children being more susceptible.

Pollution effect assessment of industrial activities on potentially toxic metal distribution in windowsill dust and surface soil in central China

Qiao Han et al.

Summary: The study identified serious Cd and As pollution as a result of industrial activities in Anyang, China, with concentrations exceeding background values in windowsill dust and surface soil. Industrial production and traffic emissions were found to influence the concentration of PTMs in windowsill dust and surface soil, posing larger non-carcinogenic risks for children. This suggests that industrial activities have caused significant harm to residents in the area.

Heavy metal pollution of road dust in a city and its highly polluted suburb; quantitative source apportionment and source-specific ecological and health risk assessment

Mohsen Heidari et al.

Summary: The main sources of heavy metal pollution in road dust of urban and suburban areas are lithogenic sources and traffic emissions, with industrial/construction activities contributing significantly to ecological risk. Health risks in suburban areas are mainly attributed to traffic emissions, especially for arsenic cancer risk.
