Metal tolerance in plants: Molecular and physicochemical interface determines the not so heavy effect of heavy metals

Meenakshi Thakur et al.

Summary: The increase in technological interventions and urbanization has led to the accumulation of heavy metals in the environment, posing a threat to human health through their entry into the food chain. The issue of restricting heavy metal entry into plant systems and modulating their response is a cause for concern that requires updated knowledge on the regulatory factors involved.

Nitric oxide affects seed oil accumulation and fatty acid composition through protein S-nitrosation

Jing Liu et al.

Summary: Nitric oxide (NO) plays a crucial role in regulating seed oil content and fatty acid composition in plants. RNAi silencing of GSNOR1 and mutation of nia genes can affect seed oil content and fatty acid composition. Treatment with SNP and L-NAME in rapeseed embryos resulted in varied oil content and fatty acid composition changes, indicating that NO regulation may impact seed yield and quality in oil crops.

Mohammad Al-Oudat et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the transfer factor of Cs-137 and Sr-90 from two types of soil to different crops, finding that cereals had the lowest transfer factor while Jew-mallow had the highest. The transfer factor varied with soil type, crop type, growth stages of plants, and mineral fertilisation, providing important information for land management in semi-arid environments contaminated with Cs-137 and Sr-90.

Microdevice with an Integrated Clark-Type Oxygen Electrode for the Measurement of the Respiratory Activity of Cells

An-Ju Hsueh et al.

Summary: A microdevice was developed for measuring the respiratory activity of cells, utilizing a microfabricated Clark-type oxygen electrode activated by water vapor to simplify the handling process for non-specialists. The use of a thin paper layer stabilized the current response, enabling stable continuous operation without disruption caused by water evaporation. Model experiments demonstrated the device's ability to clearly monitor cellular oxygen consumption, showcasing its potential for various applications in biology research.

Analysis of accumulation and phytotoxicity mechanism of uranium and cadmium in two sweet potato cultivars

Jin-long Lai et al.

Summary: This study aimed to uncover the accumulation and phytotoxicity mechanism of sweet potato roots after exposure to toxic levels of uranium and cadmium. Different sweet potato cultivars showed varietal differences in U and Cd accumulation, with high concentrations inhibiting growth and damaging root microstructure. U and Cd mainly accumulated in root cell walls and vacuoles, affecting mineral nutrition and photosynthetic metabolism, while RNA-seq analysis revealed responses in cell wall and plant hormone signal transduction pathways to U and Cd toxicity.

Effects of thorium on bacterial, microalgal and micromeiofaunal community structures in a periphytic biofilm

Caroline Doose et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of Th on microbial communities of periphytic biofilms. The presence of Th modified the diatom and bacterial community structures, reducing diversity and increasing cell density. The changes in diatom and bacterial communities could explain the higher number of individual diatoms and micromeiofauna observed in Th-exposed conditions.

Summary: The study examined the levels of U-238 and Th-232 in soil of Ezillo paddy fields, as well as their transfer and accumulation in rice grains. The concentrations of these radionuclides in soil were higher than the worldwide average, while their levels in rice were below the global average. The transfer factors of radionuclides across different soil depths were within the ranges reported in literature.

Siwei Gu et al.

Summary: The effects of metal ion properties and the cell wall structure of green alga Neochloris oleoabundans on five selected heavy metal ions were investigated. Pb(II) showed the strongest inhibitive effects on the adsorption of other metal ions, followed by Cu(II). The adsorption capacity of N. oleoabundans biomass to the tested two-valence metal ions is proportional to the electronegativity and inversely proportional to the radius of the metal ions.

Zeljka Zgorelec et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of fertilisation on radionuclide transfer from soil to maize crops. The results showed that fertilisation did not affect the radiological properties of the soil, had a suppressive effect on the transfer of radionuclides of the 232Th decay chain, and had little impact on 210Pb concentration in stems.
