Exploring the use of cellulose nanocrystal as surface-washing agent for oiled shoreline cleanup

Zhikun Chen et al.

Summary: Salt concentration was found to be the most influential factor in facilitating oil removal with nanocellulose-based nanofluids. Excess nanocellulose was shown to hinder oil removal by increasing fluid viscosity. Biotoxicity tests revealed nanocellulose-based nanofluid had no negative effects on algae growth and could even mitigate oil toxicity.

Magnetic hollow buoyant alginate beads achieving rapid remediation of oil contamination on water

Satya Candra Wibawa Sakti et al.

Summary: The magnetic maleic anhydride-alginate graphene oxide hollow beads (GO-MAGB-MA) developed in this study exhibit superior adsorption performance for oil removal, with pH-independent, rapid equilibrium adsorption, and high adsorption capacity. Compared to other reported adsorbents, GO-MAGB-MA is buoyant and magnetically responsive during the adsorption process, making it easy to collect and regenerate, avoiding secondary pollution issues. Further research combining with other technologies such as skimmer and continuous column adsorption can be conducted for large-scale oily water remediation.
