Theoretical studies on the heterogeneous ozonolysis of syringol on graphene: Mechanism, kinetics and ecotoxicity assessment

Jianfei Sun et al.

Summary: Research has shown that soot particles with a graphene-like structure are important in heterogeneous oxidation, and the mechanism of heterogeneous ozonolysis of syringol on graphene sheets has been studied using density functional theory. The results indicate that the GP sheet plane serves as an adsorbent in the ozonolysis of syringol, which is more likely to degrade in wet weather.

Quantum chemical study of the mechanisms, kinetics, and ecotoxicity assessment of OH radical-initiated reactions of 2,2′,4,4′,5,5′ -hexabrominated diphenyl ether (BDE-153) in atmosphere and wastewater

Junfang Yao et al.

Summary: The oxidation mechanisms and ecotoxicity of BDE-153, along with the assessment of reaction kinetics in both gas and aqueous phases, were investigated using quantum chemical methods. The results showed that the transformation products remain toxic to aquatic organisms, and total rate constants and half-lives were evaluated at suitable temperature and pressure conditions. Solvent models were also used to examine the solvent effect on total reactions. These findings provide insights into the transformation mechanism, atmospheric fate, and ecotoxicity of BDE-153, laying a foundation for experimental and industrial applications.

Theoretical study on the atmospheric degradation mechanism and subsequent products of E,E-2,4-hexadienal with hydroxyl radical

Yanan Sun et al.

Summary: E,E-2,4-hexadienal is likely a precursor of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) and is important in atmospheric chemistry. Quantum chemical calculations were used to study its reaction mechanism with hydroxyl radical, revealing multiple pathways and products that impact atmospheric radical cycling, ozone production, and SOA formation. The theoretical rate constant of the reaction at 298 K matches experimental data, with an atmospheric lifetime of about 2.6 h.

Effective degradation of 2,4-dihydroxybenzophenone by zero-valent iron powder (Fe0)-activated persulfate in aqueous solution: Kinetic study, product identification and theoretical calculations

Mengting Zou et al.

Summary: In this study, 2,4-Dihydroxybenzophenone (BP-1) was efficiently degraded using the Fe-0/PS system, with various parameters affecting the degradation efficiency investigated. The degradation of BP-1 in different water matrices was compared, and multiple potential degradation pathways were proposed based on the identification of oxidation products. The study also showed a decrease in toxicity of intermediates during the oxidation of BP-1.

Theoretical insights into the degradation of tyrosol stimulated by hydroxyl and sulfate radicals in wastewater and ecotoxicity evaluation

Xiaofei Bo et al.

Summary: The study found that highly oxidative radicals have a significant impact on the photochemical degradation of tyrosol in wastewater, especially the generation of SO4 center dot-. The degradation of tyrosol is mainly influenced by H-abstraction reactions and OH-radical addition, although the degradation product P7 may pose greater harm to aquatic organisms.

Mechanisms, kinetics and eco-toxicity assessment of singlet oxygen, sulfate and hydroxyl radicals-initiated degradation of fenpiclonil in aquatic environments

Jiaoxue Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the photochemical transformation mechanisms of fenpiclonil in aquatic environments, revealing that high temperature favors its degradation and some transformation products remain toxic. The research provides guidance for further experimental research and industrial application of fungicide degradation based on theoretical calculations.

S-doping α-Fe2O3 induced efficient electron-hole separation for enhanced persulfate activation toward carbamazepine oxidation: Experimental and DFT study

Jing Deng et al.

Summary: Sulfur-doped alpha-Fe2O3 has been successfully synthesized and applied in activating persulfate for carbamazepine degradation under UV irradiation, showing significantly enhanced photocatalytic performance. The introduction of water matrix species exerted different effects on CBZ degradation, and the degradation process involved the generation of various radicals leading to the destruction of CBZ molecules through hydroxylation, deamination, and subsequent reactions according to HPLC-MS and DFT analysis.
