Population genomic analysis of Aegilops tauschii identifies targets for bread wheat improvement

Kumar Gaurav et al.

Summary: The study sequenced 242 accessions of Aegilops tauschii and identified a rare lineage contributing to the wheat D subgenome. Through association mapping, genomic regions with candidate genes for disease and pest resistance were identified and successfully transferred into wheat. Exploiting the genomic diversity of the wild progenitor allows for rapid trait discovery and functional genetic validation.

Fine mapping of powdery mildew resistance gene MlWE74 derived from wild emmer wheat (Triticum turgidum ssp. dicoccoides) in an NBS-LRR gene cluster

Keyu Zhu et al.

Summary: In this study, the powdery mildew resistance gene MlWE74 from wild emmer wheat accession G-748-M was mapped in an NBS-LRR gene cluster on chromosome 2BS. The study revealed that the resistance in wheat line WE74 is controlled by a single dominant gene, MlWE74, and identified molecular markers linked to this gene. Additionally, several candidate genes were identified for further investigation in map-based cloning of MlWE74.

A highly differentiated region of wheat chromosome 7AL encodes a Pm1a immune receptor that recognizes its corresponding AvrPm1a effector from Blumeria graminis

Tim Hewitt et al.

Summary: The discovery of the first powdery mildew resistance gene Pm1a in wheat revealed its location in a distal region of chromosome 7AL suppressing genetic recombination. Through transformation, genome sequencing, and expression studies, the resistance mechanism of Pm1a was successfully identified and characterized.

Creation and judicious application of a wheat resistance gene atlas

Amber N. Hafeez et al.

Summary: Cloning R genes in wheat has accelerated due to advances in sequencing technologies and bioinformatics. To combat evolving pathogen populations, an international community proposes creating a wheat R-gene atlas to identify and deploy sources of resistance, utilizing biparental mapping, mutational genomics, and whole-genome association genetics for a dynamic and durable approach to R-gene deployment.

NLR immune receptors and diverse types of non-NLR proteins control race-specific resistance in Triticeae

Javier Sanchez-Martin et al.

Summary: Recent advances in sequencing and genomics have accelerated the identification of race-specific resistance (R) genes and their corresponding avirulence (Avr) genes in wheat, barley, rye, and their wild relatives. The diversity of proteins encoded by these genes suggests that polyploid cereal genomes have the potential to generate a variety of resistance genes.

TdPm60 identified in wild emmer wheat is an ortholog of Pm60 and constitutes a strong candidate for PmG16 powdery mildew resistance

Yinghui Li et al.

Summary: This study identified the TdPm60 alleles from wild emmer wheat as a strong candidate for PmG16 mildew resistance, which showed improved resistance in Israeli modern bread wheat. The findings suggest that TdPm60 could also be a candidate for other powdery mildew resistance genes.

Wheat Pm4 resistance to powdery mildew is controlled by alternative splice variants encoding chimeric proteins

Javier Sanchez-Martin et al.

Summary: The wheat Pm4 gene conferring race-specific powdery mildew resistance encodes a chimeric kinase-MCTP protein. Its two alternative splice variants interact to form an ER-associated complex and are both essential for resistance function.
