Hysteresis and instabilities in a spheroid in precession near the resonance with the tilt-over mode

C. Nobili et al.

Summary: This study experimentally explores flows driven by precession in an oblate spheroid, near possible resonance with the tilt-over mode. The study reports a hysteresis cycle between two uniform vorticity solutions and addresses the destabilization of each branch at low enough Ekman number. It also confirms the possible presence of a conical shear instability in the spheroid, but available measurements are not enough to definitively determine the origin of the excited instabilities.

Conditions for turbulent Ekman layers in precessionally driven flow

B. A. Buffett

Summary: In this study, 3-D numerical calculations were used to assess the transition to turbulence in precessional flow, indicating that the transition to turbulence occurs near Re=500, higher than the typical value for stable Ekman layers. Complications due to fluid stratification or a magnetic field may suppress the transition to turbulence, reducing the likelihood of turbulent Ekman layers in the Earth's core.
