The effects of particle clustering on hindered settling in high-concentration particle suspensions

Yinuo Yao et al.

Summary: This study found that cluster formation in high concentration particle suspensions is strongly dependent on the Archimedes number and weakly dependent on the volume fraction. Particles in low Archimedes number cases form less frequent but long-lived clusters, while high Archimedes number cases consist of more frequent but short-lived clusters. The results imply the existence of an Archimedes number for particles in fluidized bed reactors that can enhance performance by reducing short circuiting due to clustering.

Comparison of the properties of segregated layers in a bidispersed fluidized bed to those of a monodispersed fluidized bed

Yinuo Yao et al.

Summary: Industrial fluidized-bed reactors can be simplified in design and operation by approximating them as the superposition of corresponding monodispersed fluidized beds. However, in bidispersed fluidized beds, various characteristics such as volume fraction, velocity fluctuations, and stresses differ among the segregated layers at different particle Reynolds numbers. Particle velocity fluctuations and hydrodynamic stresses show significant variations in different layers as the particle Reynolds number changes.
