Paper product production identified as the main source of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in a Norwegian lake: Source and historic emission tracking

Hakon A. Langberg et al.

Summary: The sediment bed in lake Tyrifjorden, Norway, is contaminated by PFAS with the main source being a factory producing paper products. Isomer profiles in sediments can be used to trace the point source of pollution. Paper fibers released from such facilities may play a significant role in PFAS transport in the aquatic environment.

Environmental Source Tracking of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances within a Forensic Context: Current and Future Techniques

Joseph A. Charbonnet et al.

Summary: Source tracking of PFASs is a new and increasingly important subfield within environmental forensics, aiming to accurately characterize and differentiate the contributions of different sources to PFAS contamination in the environment. The development of this field requires a combination of analytical measurements, multivariate analyses, and an understanding of PFAS fate and transport, with a need to enhance current analytical capabilities as the field progresses.

Environmental Sources, Chemistry, Fate, and Transport of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances: State of the Science, Key Knowledge Gaps, and Recommendations Presented at the August 2019 SETAC Focus Topic Meeting

Jennifer L. Guelfo et al.

Summary: The SETAC Focused Topic Meeting on the environmental management of PFAS gathered experts from around the world to critically evaluate new information and address challenges in PFAS classification, analytical methods, and assessment of source zones. The outcomes highlight the need for increased availability of analytical standards and methods for PFAS assessment, as well as improved tools for risk management and policy guidance.
