Microbial fuel cell coupled ecological floating bed for enhancing bioelectricity generation and nitrogen removal

Xiao-Li Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the performance of an ecological floating bed-microbial fuel cell (EFB-MFC) coupled system for electricity generation and nitrogen removal. Results showed that introducing plants into the MFC system reduced resistance and increased voltage, while also improving NH4+-N and TN removal efficiency. Water spinach system showed the best performance, but rotten roots of windmill grass released extra NH4+-N which impaired nitrogen removal. Radial oxygen loss and root exudates played significant roles in enhancing electricity generation and nitrogen removal. Electrical stimulation of enzyme activity related to nitrogen removal and migration of NH4+-N contributed to enhancing nitrogen removal.

MnCo2O4 coated carbon felt anode for enhanced microbial fuel cell performance

Khurram Tahir et al.

Summary: This study synthesized a binder-free manganese cobalt oxide anode with a large electrochemically active and rough surface area, leading to improved microbial fuel cell performance. The superior bio-electrochemical activity, reduced ion transfer resistance, and excellent capacitance of the synthesized anode resulted in enhanced power density. The modified anode also accelerated the enrichment of electro-active microbes, as shown by high-throughput biofilm analysis.

Evaluation of the effect of temperature on the stability and antimicrobial activity of rifampicin quinone

Indorica Sutradhar et al.

Summary: This study reveals that Rifampicin Quinone in solution undergoes a temperature-dependent chemical conversion to Rifampicin. The conversion occurs in physiologically relevant temperatures and time scales and was confirmed using HPLC and LC-MS methods. Moreover, the conversion of Rifampicin Quinone to Rifampicin leads to an increase in antimicrobial activity.

Response of antibiotic and heavy metal resistance genes to tetracyclines and copper in substrate-free hydroponic microcosms with Myriophyllum aquaticum

Xuan Guo et al.

Summary: Constructed wetlands are important reservoirs of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and heavy metal resistance genes (MRGs). This study found that the presence of tetracyclines and copper in hydroponic microcosms led to an increase in the levels of resistant genes due to co-selection pressure. Reducing exogenous inputs of antibiotics/heavy metals and suspended solids in effluent is suggested for mitigating resistant genes in phytoremediation technologies.
