Effect of Icing Airfoil on Aerodynamic Performance of Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine

Summary: In this paper, the aerodynamic characteristics of icing airfoil are clarified through wind tunnel tests, showing that icing airfoil has lower lift coefficient and higher drag coefficient compared to clean airfoil. Numerical analysis further reveals that the presence of ice decreases the maximum output power and requires a higher wind speed to achieve the rated power of wind turbine.

The analysis includes a systematic review on the reliability, availability, and maintainability data of both offshore and onshore wind turbines, and discusses the impact of design characteristics and environmental conditions on their performance. The study suggests that efforts worth putting into research and data collection are recommended to improve the performance prediction of future offshore projects.
