Testing the general theory of relativity using gravitational wave propagation from dark standard sirens

Suvodip Mukherjee et al.

Summary: Alternative theories of gravity predict modifications in the propagation of gravitational waves, with the geometric distances accessible from baryon acoustic oscillation measurements providing a method to measure deviations from general theory of relativity via the GW sources. This multimessenger test combines electromagnetic and gravitational wave observations to achieve higher accuracy than possible from use of bright standard sirens.

Gravitational wave friction in light of GW170817 and GW190521

S. Mastrogiovanni et al.

Summary: In this study, gravitational wave events GW170817 and GW190521, along with their proposed electromagnetic counterparts, were used to constrain cosmological parameters and theories of gravity beyond General Relativity. By introducing a friction term into the gravitational wave propagation equation to modify the luminosity distance, constraints on the GR deviation parameters were obtained. The study demonstrated the possibility of jointly constraining the ACDM parameters and GR deviation parameters from both events.

Mapping the inhomogeneous Universe with standard sirens: degeneracy between inhomogeneity and modified gravity theories

Marios Kalomenopoulos et al.

Summary: The study focuses on calculating the luminosity distance of gravitational wave sources, considering the inhomogeneities in the matter distribution predicted in numerical simulations of structure formation. The results suggest that inhomogeneities caused by matter clustering can mimic certain categories of modified gravity theories, requiring additional friction terms to distinguish them.

Gravitational-wave detector networks: standard sirens on cosmology and modified gravity theory

Tao Yang

Summary: The study constructs catalogues of standard sirens based on future gravitational wave detector networks and predicts Hubble diagrams that will be available in the 2030s. Two strategies are adopted for forecasts, one being traditional model-fitting Markov-Chain Monte-Carlo method and the other being machine-learning nonparametric reconstruction techniques.

Observation of Gravitational Waves from Two Neutron Star-Black Hole Coalescences

R. Abbott et al.

Summary: This study reports the observation of gravitational waves from two compact binary coalescences in LIGO's and Virgo's third observing run, with properties consistent with neutron star-black hole (NSBH) binaries. The study provides detailed information on the source component masses, source luminosity distances, and more for the two events observed.

Cosmology with LIGO/Virgo dark sirens: Hubble parameter and modified gravitational wave propagation

Andreas Finke et al.

Summary: This study presents a methodology for correlating 'dark sirens' with galaxy catalogs and explores improvements for gravitational wave detections. The results provide measurements of H-0 and Xi(0), showing interesting constraints for observing dark energy and modifications of gravity at cosmological scales. The study also discusses limits on modified GW propagation under certain conditions.

GWTC-2: Compact Binary Coalescences Observed by LIGO and Virgo during the First Half of the Third Observing Run

R. Abbott et al.

Summary: This report presents 39 candidate gravitational-wave events detected by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo during the first half of the third observing run (O3a) between April 1, 2019 and October 1, 2019. The events include black hole binary mergers up to a redshift of approximately 0.8 and events where the components cannot be unambiguously identified. The range of candidate event masses has expanded compared to previous catalogs, with the inclusion of binary systems with asymmetric mass ratios.

Cobaya: code for Bayesian analysis of hierarchical physical models

Jesus Torrado et al.

Summary: Cobaya is a general-purpose Bayesian analysis code designed for models with complex internal interdependencies. It efficiently exploits interdependencies between different stages of a model pipeline, automatically caches intermediate results, and optimally sorts parameters to minimize computational costs during sampling. The code allows exploration of posteriors using Monte Carlo samplers, functions for maximization and importance-reweighting of samples, and can be extended and parallelized with minimal overhead per posterior evaluation.

Testing the quasar Hubble diagram with LISA standard sirens

Lorenzo Speri et al.

Summary: LISA serves as an effective tool to test the reliability of ΛCDM cosmology using standard sirens from quasars at high redshift, with high resolution. The precision of cosmological parameters is related to the number of observed LISA MBHB standard sirens, allowing for differentiation between different models with a small sample size.

Probing fundamental physics with gravitational waves: The next generation

Scott E. Perkins et al.

Summary: Gravitational wave observations of compact binary mergers are already providing tests of general relativity and constraints on modified gravity. The sensitivity upgrades of the instruments and uncertainties in astrophysical compact binary populations are crucial in determining the impact on investigating fundamental physics with gravitational waves. Using a stacked Fisher matrix analysis, future theory-agnostic bounds on modifications of general relativity and specific theories can be thoroughly investigated.
