A study of reusability assessment and thermal behaviors for thermoplastic composite materials after melting process: Polypropylene/ thermoplastic polyurethane blends

Ting An Lin et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the synergistic effect between thermoplastic materials and discuss the compatibilized effect, particularly caused by polypropylene grafted maleic anhydride (MA). The addition of MA improves the thermal stability of the PP/TTPU blend, with an average increase of 5 degrees C in the third thermal degradation temperature. The SEM images demonstrate that the incorporation of TTPU enhances the toughness of the surface, leading to greater interfacial compatibility and better adhesion between PP and TTPU.

Adhesion Improvement of Thermoplastics-Based Composites by Atmospheric Plasma and UV Treatments

Gennaro Scarselli et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the adhesive bonding of thermoplastic composites in aerospace applications, specifically PPS, PEEK, and PEI carbon fiber composites. Different surface treatments such as atmospheric plasma and UV radiation significantly improved the performance of PEEK and PPS joints, while PEI remained unaffected and performed well throughout.

Internal arcing and lightning strike damage in short carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites

Vipin Kumar et al.

Summary: The study found that in lightning strike tests, the electrical conductivity, thermal stability, and fiber orientation of thermoplastic composites significantly affected the damage. PPS composite showed the highest resilience against lightning strikes, while CF exfoliation damage observed in the CF-ABS composite was reported for the first time.

2D electrical resistance (ER) mapping to Detect damage for carbon fiber reinforced polyamide composites under tensile and flexure loading

Jong-Hyun Kim et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the in-situ damage sensing and nondestructive evaluation of Carbon fiber (CF)/Polyamide (PA) composite using electrical resistance (ER) technique. The study shows that the dispersion of CF in the composite and damage sensing capabilities depend on the weight fraction of CF. The optimal condition for evaluation of CF dispersion and damage sensing using ER is found to be the inclusion of 20 wt% CF in PA composite.

Utilization of devulcanized waste rubber tire in development of heat insulation composite

Waseem Hittini et al.

Summary: This study investigated the possibility of using devulcanized rubber tires as fillers for thermoplastic thermal insulators. The physical, thermal, and mechanical properties of devulcanized rubber tire-polystyrene composites were studied, with composites containing less than 40% devulcanized rubber tire showing superior properties. The results were further improved by alkaline treatment of the devulcanized rubber tire, enhancing the coherence between the treated rubber tire and polystyrene.

Improved mechanical performances of short aramid fiber-reinforced polypropylene composites by Ti3C2 Mxene nanosheets

Bolin Tang et al.

Summary: By binding two-dimensional Ti3C2 Mxene nanosheets to short aramid fibers, a modified SAF (Ti3C2/SAF) was formed to improve the mechanical properties of PP composites. The Ti3C2/SAF/PP composites showed significantly improved tensile and impact strength, attributed to enhanced interfacial bonding strength between fibers and PP. This work provides a promising strategy for enhancing the mechanical properties of fiber-reinforced PP composites.

Effect of the Test Procedure and Thermoplastic Composite Resin Type on the Curved Beam Strength

Robin Hron et al.

Summary: The application of thermoplastic composites in aircraft construction is increasing. This study compared the mechanical behavior of three carbon fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composites, showing significantly different results when evaluated using different standards. The relatively new PAEK composite outperformed the older PPS and PEEK composites, with good potential for use in aerospace production due to its lower processing temperature.
