Comparison of the heteroatoms-doped biomass-derived carbon prepared by one-step nitrogen-containing activator for high performance supercapacitor

Lihua Cao et al.

Summary: This study proposes a simple and cost-effective one-step method to prepare nitrogen-doped biomass-derived hierarchical porous carbon materials using different nitrogen-containing compounds as activation agent and dopant. Among them, urea is identified as the most effective N dopant, while NH4Cl is the porogen with the minimum collapse of pollen grain. The prepared electrodes show promising electrochemical performance in terms of specific capacitance, rate performance, capacitance retention rate, and energy density. This work may guide the selection of N dopants and porogens for preparing biomass-derived carbon materials for specific applications.

Synthesis and Application of Granular Activated Carbon from Biomass Waste Materials for Water Treatment: A Review

Joseph Jjagwe et al.

Summary: There is a growing global demand for activated carbon in water treatment, however, commercial activated carbon is expensive and non-renewable, leading to a search for alternative renewable materials. Biomass waste shows promise as a source for activated carbon production, but faces challenges such as low strength and poor attrition resistance.

Chitin derived nitrogen-doped porous carbons with ultrahigh specific surface area and tailored hierarchical porosity for high performance supercapacitors

Si Zheng et al.

Summary: This study reports the fabrication of nitrogen rich activated nanosized carbon with hierarchical micro/mesoporous structure and ultrahigh specific surface area using a template-free and one-step carbonization-activation method. The activated nanocarbon showed high electrochemical performance, with a specific capacitance of 245 F/g in a three-electrode system and 227 F/g in a two-electrode system. The prepared capacitors exhibited superior rate performance and good cycle stability, retaining 98% capacitance after 10000 charge-discharge cycles.
