Compressible Carbon Sponges from Delignified Wood for Fast Cleanup and Enhanced Recovery of Crude Oil Spills by Joule Heat and Photothermal Effect

Ming-Bang Wu et al.

Summary: A novel polydimethylsiloxane-decorated wood carbon sponge (PDMS@WCS) with desirable compressibility and hydrophobicity for fast adsorption and enhanced recovery of crude oil via the promotion of Joule-heating and photothermal effect is reported. The PDMS@WCS can be compressed and released at a constant strain of 50% for multiple times without structural damage, allowing facile exclusion of adsorbed crude oil under external pressure to achieve enhanced recovery.

Photothermal and Joule heating-assisted thermal management sponge for efficient cleanup of highly viscous crude oil

Xingwang Wu et al.

Summary: This study introduces a superhydrophobic/oleophilic carbon nanotubes and polypyrrole coated melamine sponge for fast and efficient cleanup of high-viscosity oil spills on the sea. The novel absorbent can convert light and electricity to heat, significantly reducing the viscosity of crude oil and accelerating absorption rate. With lower cost and fast oil absorption speed, this work provides a new option to tackle large-scale oil spill disasters on the sea surface.
