Novel strategy for membrane biofouling control in MBR with CdS/MIL-101 modified PVDF membrane by in situ visible light irradiation

Lingfeng Ni et al.

Summary: Novel control strategies for membrane biofouling with eco-friendly photocatalytic technology using metal-organic frameworks were studied. The synthesized CdS/MIL-101 photocatalyst modified membrane C2 showed enhanced hydrophilicity and water permeability compared to the pristine membrane C0, leading to an extended filtration cycle and excellent biofouling alleviation effect. The photocatalytic membrane demonstrated remarkable antimicrobial effect and higher antifouling capabilities in filtration tests, with reactive species playing a predominant role in the anti-biofouling processes.

Encapsulating Copper Nanocrystals into Metal-Organic Frameworks for Cascade Reactions by Photothermal Catalysis

Lin Wang et al.

Summary: In this work, nanocrystals of Cu2O were encapsulated by metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) through a simple strategy, resulting in the successful fabrication of Cu@HKUST-1 composites with uniform morphology and controlled MOF thickness. The integration of Cu NCs properties with MOF advantages helped to create a multifunctional catalyst, exhibiting cooperative catalytic activity and improved recyclability.

Green photocatalytic disinfection of real sewage: efficiency evaluation and toxicity assessment of eco-friendly TiO2-based magnetic photocatalyst under solar light

Juhua He et al.

Summary: The study found that solar-light-driven photocatalytic disinfection shows potential in low-salinity sewage, meeting discharge standards in a short time without bacterial regrowth. However, high-salinity sewage requires a longer time to meet standards due to poorer water quality, showing limited practical significance. The characteristics of real sewage significantly influence photocatalytic disinfection effectiveness.

Fate of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes in home water purification systems

Xin Gu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the presence of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in tap water, effluents, and filters of home water purification systems (HWPSs). While HWPSs with fresh filters showed high efficiency in removing antibiotics and ARGs, long-term operation resulted in reduced removal rates and even release of antibiotics and ARGs. The presence of biofilms on many filters and the correlation between certain bacterial phyla and the abundance of ARGs highlight the potential risks posed by HWPSs in accelerating exposure to antibiotics and ARGs for water consumers.

Selective adsorption of ofloxacin and ciprofloxacin from a binary system using lignin-based adsorbents: Quantitative analysis, adsorption mechanisms, and structure-activity relationship

Boqiang Gao et al.

Summary: A series of actinia-shaped LNAEs were designed with LN as the core and grafted PAA as the tentacle, showing selective removal of CIP over OFL due to the CAHB formed between the carboxyl group of LNAEs and the secondary amino group of CIP, with the distribution of branched PAA playing a key role in improving adsorptive selectivity. This study provides a fundamental understanding of the structure-activity relationship of modified adsorbents and offers guidance for the development of novel and efficient adsorbents in binary pollutant systems.

Responses of aerobic granular sludge to fluoroquinolones: Microbial community variations, and antibiotic resistance genes

Yi-Jing Shi et al.

Summary: This study found that under high levels of ammonium, aerobic granular sludge (AGS) showed good removal efficiency for three fluoroquinolones (FQs), with ciprofloxacin (CFX) and norfloxacin (NFX) being more effectively removed. Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) related to FQs tended to exist in denitrifying bacteria, indicating a preference for denitrifiers in the distribution of these elements.
