Summary: The study found that during the COVID-19 pandemic, the majority of excess deaths compared with expected numbers were related to COVID-19. Deaths related to COVID-19 accounted for 87% of excess mortality. In homes, only 14% of excess deaths were COVID-19 related, with cancer and cardiac disease being more prevalent. In care homes or hospices, over half of the excess deaths were related to COVID-19.

Summary: The study found that there was no significant increase in suicide rates in England in the months following the first national lockdown in 2020, despite evidence of greater distress. This suggests that the COVID-19 pandemic did not directly lead to a rise in suicide rates in England.
