Impact of pulmonary embolism on morbidity and mortality in patients undergoing pancreatic surgery

Benjamin Muessle et al.

Summary: Postoperative pulmonary embolism (PE) is a potentially life-threatening complication after pancreatic surgery. This study of 947 patients found a 2.7% incidence of PE, with risk factors including increased BMI, longer operation duration, and history of deep venous thrombosis. PE patients had significantly higher rates of postoperative complications and a 30-day mortality rate.

Hypercoagulability in Cushing's syndrome: From arterial to venous disease

Matthieu St-Jean et al.

Summary: Cushing's syndrome is associated with multi-system complications including hematological abnormalities. Hemostatic parameter alterations and endothelial dysfunction lead to increased thrombotic events, particularly within 1-2 months post-surgery. Evaluation and risk stratification of patients is crucial in preventing these events.

Risk Reduction and Perioperative Complications in Patients With Diabetes and Multiple Medical Comorbidities Undergoing Charcot Foot Reconstruction

Madeline Lyons et al.

Summary: This study shows that medical optimization of patients with diabetes and multiple medical comorbidities prior to elective complex reconstruction orthopedic surgery reduces hospital stay and perioperative complications risk. Preoperative anemia and congestive heart failure are associated with longer hospitalizations in this patient group. The ACS NSQIP Risk Calculator is a reliable predictor of complications during the perioperative period.

Global Tuberculosis Report 2020-Reflections on the Global TB burden, treatment and prevention efforts

Jeremiah Chakaya et al.

Summary: The global TB report for October 2020 highlights slow progress in TB control efforts and the need to ramp up screening and diagnostic test services. Key drivers of TB, including undernutrition, poverty, diabetes, tobacco smoking, and household air pollution, must be addressed to achieve WHO 2035 TB care and prevention targets. Global focus is needed on the development of new vaccines for TB using new technological methods.

Risk Factors and Outcomes for Preoperative Asymptomatic Pulmonary Embolism in Patients Aged 60 Years and Over with Hip Fracture

Fang-lun Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigated the risk factors and outcomes of preoperative asymptomatic pulmonary embolism in patients aged 60 years and older with delayed surgery for hip fracture. The incidence of PE was 18.9%, with risk factors including hypertension, cerebrovascular accident, smoking, high D-dimer levels, and high potassium levels. Mortality within the first year postoperatively was higher in patients with PE compared to those without. Routine CTPA examination for preoperative asymptomatic PE could be beneficial for these patients.

Meningioma Surgery in Patients ≥70 Years of Age: Clinical Outcome and Validation of the SKALE Score

Daniel Monden et al.

Summary: With increasing average life expectancy, the number of elderly meningioma patients has increased proportionally. Surgical resection in elderly meningioma patients can lead to higher postoperative morbidity and mortality, but may be reasonable for selected patients, especially when their SKALE score is >= 8.

COVID-19 Disease and Hypercoagulability Leading to Acute Ischemic Stroke

Naresh Mullaguri et al.

Summary: The presence of hypercoagulability in patients with COVID-19 disease, with or without respiratory failure, suggests the importance of considering thrombotic complications even in cases that may not initially present with respiratory symptoms. Testing for SARS-CoV-2 in patients with stroke symptoms may be beneficial in areas with high case burdens or in patients with a history of exposure.
