Casting a Health Equity Lens on Endocrinology and Diabetes

Sherita Hill Golden et al.

Summary: Endocrinologists are focusing on biological factors contributing to disparities in diabetes, obesity, and other endocrine disorders, while also examining contributing factors and solutions more broadly. Historical discriminatory practices have led to biases in healthcare providers and distrust from minority patients, impacting the quality of care. There is a need to address poverty-related social determinants of health through culturally appropriate services, awareness of unconscious bias, and advocacy for social policies that address environmental justice.

Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Bone Health and Outcomes in the United States

Sabrina E. Noel et al.

Summary: Osteoporosis is a bone disease with racial and ethnic disparities in bone outcomes. Variations in bone density, prevalence of osteoporosis and fractures, as well as disparities in screening and treatment exist across different racial and ethnic groups. Suboptimal osteoporosis management and postfracture care may be experienced by non-Hispanic black, Hispanic, and Asian populations, highlighting the need for additional population-based studies.

Differences in the Use of Telephone and Video Telemedicine Visits During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Jorge A. Rodriguez et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between patient and neighborhood characteristics and visit modality during the COVID-19 pandemic, finding that 65% of visits were virtual with patients over 65, Black, Hispanic, Spanish-speaking, and from low broadband access areas less likely to use video visits. Practices and clinicians played a larger role in the variation of video visit use than patients.

Summary: While Black patients have lower adjusted odds of accessing care through telemedicine compared to white patients, there is an increasing uptake of telemedicine by young, female Black patients. Additionally, Black telemedicine patients are more likely to receive a COVID diagnosis compared to white patients. Income and household size of a zip code are significantly related to telemedicine use.
