A Cyclone-Centered Perspective on the Drivers of Asymmetric Patterns in the Atmosphere and Sea Ice during Arctic Cyclones

Robin Clancy et al.

Summary: This study investigates the spatial patterns of atmosphere and sea ice during Arctic cyclones using a novel cyclone-centered approach. The results suggest that the structure of Arctic cyclones is similar to those in the midlatitudes and their impact on sea ice is heterogeneous. The dynamic processes are found to be the primary driver of sea ice response to cyclones.

An anatomy of Arctic sea ice forecast biases in the seasonal prediction system with EC-Earth

Ruben Cruz-Garcia et al.

Summary: The quality of initial conditions is crucial in climate predictions. Inconsistencies between different components can cause initialization shocks, impacting the accuracy of forecasts, especially for sea ice concentration. The dominance of ICs inconsistency in forecast biases suggests a larger impact than previously thought, requiring the use of high frequency data for detection and filtering.

Year-round impact of winter sea ice thickness observations on seasonal forecasts

Beena Balan-Sarojini et al.

Summary: Many seasonal forecasting centres now provide dynamical predictions of sea ice, with the initialization of sea ice thickness in its early stages. This study demonstrates that by incorporating Arctic-wide winter sea ice thickness observations into the ECMWF ocean-sea-ice analysis system, the initial conditions of coupled forecasts are improved, leading to reduced forecast errors and biases in sea ice volume and thickness. The results suggest that better initialization of sea ice thickness is crucial for improving seasonal sea ice forecasts.
