The clear-sky downwelling long-wave radiation at the surface in current and future climates

Callum J. Shakespeare et al.

Summary: A semi-analytic model has been developed to predict downwelling long-wave radiation based on five parameters. The model can calculate downwelling long-wave based on temperature and humidity observations, and can also study the impact of CO2 concentration changes on surface downwelling long-wave. By validating the model's representation, this study provides a simple yet effective framework to understand the controlling parameters of downwelling long-wave and its variability in different climates.

Effective Radiative Forcing in a GCM With Fixed Surface Temperatures

Timothy Andrews et al.

Summary: The study evaluates effective radiative forcing in the ACCESS1.0 GCM and finds significant differences in ERF when land warming is considered in fixed-SST experimental designs. Land warming contributes to adjustments in longwave radiation emission, land snow cover, water vapor, and cloudiness, ultimately reducing the 4xCO2 ERF by about 1.0 W m(-2) in fixed-SST experiments. Stomatal effects of CO2 are also quantified and found to be a significant contributor to land warming effects in the model.

Satellite and Ocean Data Reveal Marked Increase in Earth's Heating Rate

Norman G. Loeb et al.

Summary: Earth's Energy Imbalance (EEI) is the difference between global mean solar radiation absorbed and thermal infrared radiation emitted to space, mainly warming the ocean and affecting land, ice, and the atmosphere. Over the past decade, EEI has shown an increasing trend primarily due to decreased reflection by clouds and sea ice, as well as increases in trace gases and water vapor leading to a decrease in outgoing longwave radiation.
