A review of sludge pretreatment methods and co-digestion to boost biogas production and energy self-sufficiency in wastewater treatment plants

Isaac Volschan Junior et al.

Summary: The debate on adapting sewage treatment objectives to circular economy and sustainability concepts has intensified, with a focus on promoting more efficient energy and resource use in wastewater treatment. Anaerobic digestion has become a viable technology for producing renewable energy, particularly through the generation of biogas in sewage treatment units and anaerobic sludge digestion. Recent advances in technology for inducing biogas generation in anaerobic digesters, including pretreatment methods and co-digestion, are discussed in terms of mechanisms, advantages, drawbacks, and technical and economic aspects. Biological pretreatment and co-digestion are identified as more promising strategies in terms of efficiency and costs.

Valorization of anaerobic digestion digestate: A prospect review

Wei Wang et al.

Summary: Anaerobic digestion is seen as a promising technology for bioenergy production, generating digestate as residual waste. The digestate contains both organic and inorganic matters, which can be considered as risky contaminants if not properly treated, but can also be valuable resources if recovered adequately. This review examines current research efforts on digestate valorization, focusing on resource recovery and potential applications, including conversion techniques and economic feasibility. The prospects for digestate valorization are optimistic.

Review on pretreatment techniques to improve anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge

V Khanh Nguyen et al.

Summary: Anaerobic digestion (AD) of sewage sludge is an efficient remediation technique, but the presence of complex floc structures and high organic matter content hinder hydrolysis. Pretreatment techniques such as mechanical, chemical, thermal, and biological processes can accelerate hydrolysis and improve AD efficiency.

Effects of silver nanoparticles on performance of anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge and associated microbial communities

Anna Grosser et al.

Summary: The form of silver significantly affected the methane yield and the proportion of hydrogen sulphide in the biogas during anaerobic digestion, while the addition of nanoparticles had a positive effect on the kinetic parameters, leading to a higher maximum rate of methane production. The microbial communities in reactors with silver nanoparticles showed significant differences compared to other reactors, with a notable increase in the Methanosarcina genus.

Digestion liquid based alkaline pretreatment of waste activated sludge promotes methane production from anaerobic digestion

Dandan He et al.

Summary: By refluxing digestion liquid into waste activated sludge pre-treatment unit, a significant increase in methane production from anaerobic digestion of waste water can be achieved. Biodegradable organics in the digestion liquid do not affect the anaerobic digestion process, but can enhance methane production through reutilization.
