Enhancing inhibition of disinfection byproducts formation and opportunistic pathogens growth during drinking water distribution by Fe2O3/Coconut shell activated carbon

Xueci Xing et al.

Summary: Fe/CAC treatment can effectively inhibit the growth of opportunistic pathogens and reduce the formation of disinfection by-products. The attached biofilms on Fe/CAC surface enhance microbial metabolic activity, improving the removal efficiency of organic matter. Additionally, EPS substances on Fe/CAC exhibit stronger viscosity and stability, reducing the release of microbial biomass and EPS substances.

The role of antibiotics and heavy metals on the development, promotion, and dissemination of antimicrobial resistance in drinking water biofilms

Victoria Rilstone et al.

Summary: The review emphasizes the mechanisms by which antimicrobial resistance (AMR) develops and is disseminated within drinking water distribution system (DWDS) biofilms. It first describes the basic intrinsic and acquired resistance mechanisms of biofilm formation, and then elaborates on the selective pressures that further induce AMR in DWDS biofilms.

Accumulation of antibiotic resistance genes in full-scale drinking water biological activated carbon (BAC) filters during backwash cycles

Kun Wan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the presence of ARGs and bacterial community in full-scale BAC filters during backwash cycle. It was found that after backwashing, the abundance of ARGs increased in biofilm samples, with many ARGs persisting in the filters. The accumulation of ARGs in filters is mainly driven by horizontal gene transfer, calling for more stringent disinfection strategies and further research to assess potential human health risks.

Enhanced Fenton-like efficiency by the synergistic effect of oxygen vacancies and organics adsorption on FexOy-d-g-C3N4 with Fe-N complexation

Yumeng Wang et al.

Summary: The d-g-C3N4-Fe composite material was prepared via a self-assembly and calcination process, demonstrating high degradation efficiency for hydroxyl-containing and hydrophobic pollutants. The Fe(III)-pi interaction on the catalyst surface can oxidize pollutants and decrease the consumption of H2O2, while the role of OVs depends on pollutant adsorption patterns.

Technologies towards antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) removal from aquatic environment: A critical review

Shengnan Li et al.

Summary: Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are recognized as emerging pollutants in aquatic environments, with their removal mechanisms remaining unclear. Further in-depth studies, systematic comparisons of removal technologies, and future research directions are needed to address the ecological feasibility and economic viability of ARGs removal technologies.

Implication on selection and replacement of granular activated carbon used in biologically activated carbon filters through meta-omics analysis

Zedong Lu et al.

Summary: The study found that once BAC filters reach a steady state, GAC adsorption still plays a major role in removing organic matter due to bioregeneration. Iodine value can be used as an indicator of BAC performance in the initial stages, dominated by adsorption, but not in later stages. Pore-size distribution characteristics may be a better indicator, representing both adsorption performance and microbial activity.
