Sustainable milling of Ti-6Al-4V: A trade-off between energy efficiency, carbon emissions and machining characteristics under MQL and cryogenic environment

Muhammad Jamil et al.

Summary: The study verified the effectiveness of CO2-snow in milling Ti-6Al-4V, showing it outperformed cryogenic-LN2, MQL, and dry cutting conditions in terms of sustainability measures and machining characteristics. With varying end-mill geometries and cutting conditions, CO2-snow and the up-milling of 42 degrees helix angle cutter performed the best.

Summary: Cutting fluids have positive effects on machinability performance, but also cause environmental and health problems. To address this, the machining industry has developed alternative green machining solutions such as minimum quantity of lubrication, vegetable based cutting fluids, cryogenics, and hybrid cooling. Results suggest that hybrid cooling methods offer an efficient solution to improve process sustainability towards cleaner production.

Investigation of surface modification and tool wear on milling Nimonic 80A under hybrid lubrication

Nimel Sworna K. Ross et al.

Summary: The use of hybrid cryogenic minimum quantity lubrication (CMQL) technique can result in lower temperatures, higher microhardness, and improved surface quality, leading to reduced tool wear. Studies on machining Nimonic 80A have shown that CMQL increases compressive residual stress and microhardness, while reducing tool wear.
