Response of soil bacterial community to agricultural reclamation in the Tengger desert, northwestern China

Lin Ye et al.

Summary: The study found that agricultural reclamation can increase the total bacterial abundance in desert soil but decrease the bacterial diversity. Bacilli and Actinobacteria are key taxa sensitive to agricultural practices such as fertilization. Different metabolic pathways, especially amino acid and carbohydrate transport and metabolism, vary between the three types of soils.

Geographical detector-based stratified regression kriging strategy for mapping soil organic carbon with high spatial heterogeneity

Yaolin Liu et al.

Summary: Spatial variability of soil organic carbon (SOC) content is crucial for precision fertilization and climate change prediction. A geographical detector-based stratified regression kriging (GD-SRK) strategy is proposed in this study to effectively guide stratification, map SOC with high spatial heterogeneity, and achieve the highest prediction accuracy and R-2 compared to other methods.

On the spatial variability and influencing factors of soil organic carbon and total nitrogen stocks in a desert oasis ecotone of northwestern China

Qiqi Cao et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the spatial distribution and influencing factors of soil organic carbon (SOC) and total nitrogen (TN) stocks to the depth of 3 m in a desert oasis ecotone of northwestern China. The results showed that SOC and TN stocks in nabkha dunes were generally higher than in bare sand dunes, and with the extension of cultivation years, the top 0.4 m depths saw significant increases in both SOC and TN stocks on croplands.

Mapping farmland soil organic carbon density in plains with combined cropping system extracted from NDVI time-series data

Zihao Wu et al.

Summary: This study successfully obtained and incorporated cropping system information in mapping farmland SOCD in plains by combining NDVI time-series data and the RK method. Significant differences in SOCD under different cropping systems were observed, with single cropping rice having higher SOCD than rice-wheat rotation and dry crops.

Digital mapping of topsoil organic carbon content in an alluvial plain area of the Terai region of Nepal

Sushil Lamichhane et al.

Summary: This study predicted and mapped the soil organic carbon content in the topsoil of the Sarlahi district in Nepal, comparing the performance of different techniques and identifying silt deposition from river systems as a key predictor for SOC content. Random Forest technique outperformed Stepwise-Multiple-Linear-Regression-Kriging in predicting SOC, indicating the importance of silt deposition in low-relief alluvial regions.

Land-use changes lead to a decrease in carbon storage in arid region, China

Guofeng Zhu et al.

Summary: The study conducted in an arid region of northwestern China found that grasslands, forests, and farmland are high-value areas for carbon storage, while deserts are low-value areas. The carbon storage in the arid region is declining, mainly due to grassland degradation. Although carbon storage in farmland has increased significantly, the expansion of farmland dominated by high carbon density grasslands, wetlands, and forests has reduced the overall carbon storage in the arid region.

Distribution characteristics and controls of soil organic carbon at different spatial scales in China′s Loess Plateau

Yi Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the distribution and controls of soil organic carbon (SOC) content at different spatial scales in China's Loess Plateau. Results showed that SOC content decreased exponentially with increasing soil depth at various scales, and the influencing factors varied among different spatial scales.
