Bamboo charcoal addition enhanced the nitrogen removal of anammox granular sludge with COD: Performance, physicochemical characteristics and microbial community

Menglei Guo et al.

Summary: The effects of different chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentrations on anammox granular sludge with Bamboo Charcoal (BC) addition were evaluated. The results showed that BC addition significantly increased TN removal efficiency and promoted the biological characteristics of granular sludge. High throughput sequencing and metagenomic sequencing analysis revealed the impact of BC addition on bacterial diversity and functional genes.

A review on anammox process for the treatment of antibiotic-containing wastewater: Linking effects with corresponding mechanisms

Jinjin Fu et al.

Summary: Antibiotics are widely present in wastewater from livestock husbandry and the pharmaceutical industry, with high biological toxicity and the potential to promote the occurrence and transmission of antibiotic resistant bacteria and genes. The anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) process shows promise in removing nitrogen from antibiotic-containing wastewater, but antibiotic inhibition has been observed. This review provides insights into the effects of antibiotics on anammox and suggests future research directions for improving nitrogen removal in antibiotic-containing wastewater treatment.

Insight into the influence of particle sizes on characteristics and microbial community in the anammox granular sludge

Chongjun Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated how particle size affects the physicochemical characteristics, nitrogen conversion activity, and microbial community in anammox sludge granules. The results showed that larger particle sizes correlated with higher wet density, settling velocity, and removal efficiency of ammonium and nitrite. High-throughput sequencing revealed that microbial richness and diversity decreased and then increased with increasing particle size. Granular sludge with a particle size of 1.0-1.5 mm had the largest EPS content and PN/PS ratio. To maintain high nitrogen removal performance, particle sizes of 1.5-2.0 mm should be selected.

Fatigue of anammox consortia under long-term 1,4-dioxane exposure and recovery potential: N-kinetics and microbial dynamics

Sherif Ismail et al.

Summary: Long-term exposure to 1,4-dioxane should not exceed 10 mg/L for successful application, as higher concentrations can significantly inhibit anammox bacteria. The first compartment of the PABR acts as a shield against the toxicity of 1,4-dioxane through high EPS secretion, but prolonged exposure at higher concentrations can lead to bacterial lysis. Despite initial inhibition, anammox bacteria were able to recover after cesation of 1,4-dioxane exposure.
