Use of the multiple stress creep recovery (MSCR) test to characterize the rutting potential of asphalt binders: A literature review

Hanqi Liu et al.

Summary: The MSCR test has been accepted to improve rutting assessment in the Superpave system, focusing on non-recoverable creep compliance and percent recovery to evaluate the resistance and elastic response of asphalt binders. Despite its success in rutting characterization, the MSCR test faces debates over test protocol and analysis methods.

Evaluation on the mechanical performance of recycled asphalt mixtures incorporated with high percentage of RAP and self-developed rejuvenators

Jizhe Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of self-developed rejuvenators on the mechanical performance of high percent RAP recycled asphalt mixtures. The results showed that these rejuvenators improved the cracking behavior and fatigue life of the mixtures, although they made them prone to permanent deformation, their moisture durability was still better than that of new asphalt mixtures.

Effects of recycling agents (RAs) on rutting resistance and moisture susceptibility of mixtures with high RAP/RAS content

Yuan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of Recycling Agents (RAs) on the rutting resistance and moisture susceptibility of high Recycled Asphalt Materials (RAM) mixtures. While high RAM generally improved rutting resistance and moisture susceptibility compared to virgin mixture, some RAs used showed a potential increase in moisture susceptibility of the high RAM mixtures. It is concluded that caution should be used in analyzing the rutting behavior of high RAM mixes as the RA used could result in inferior rutting behavior under wet conditions.

Enhancement mechanism of induction heating on blending efficiency of RAP - virgin asphalt in steel slag recycled asphalt mixtures

Chao Yang et al.

Summary: The study investigates the induction heating technique on the blending efficiency and interaction mechanism of RAP asphalt and virgin asphalt in steel slag recycled asphalt mixtures. Induction heating helps decrease flow activation energy, improve blending degree of asphalt layer, and reduce carbonyl index and sulfoxide index of blend asphalt layer significantly.

Quantification of the degree of blending in hot-mix asphalt (HMA) with reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) using Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDX) analysis

Ibrahim A. Abdalfattah et al.

Summary: The study used Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDX) to analyze the blending degree between virgin and RAP binders in HMA mixtures with different RAP contents and found that the blending efficiency decreased with higher RAP content and binder PG. Mixtures with 25% RAP showed slightly lower blending degree compared to 15% RAP mixtures, while mixtures with 40% RAP exhibited poor and nonhomogeneous blending. Additionally, RAP binders with lower PG showed better blending efficiency than those with higher PG levels.

Rheological and microscopic characteristics of bio-oil recycled asphalt

Songtao Lv et al.

Summary: The study investigates the use of bio-oil and recycled asphalt as substitutes for petroleum asphalt in road engineering. Laboratory aging tests were conducted on six aging asphalt samples to determine their rheological behaviors. Results showed that bio-oil had a significant impact on the high-and low-temperature behaviors of aging asphalt. Microscopic tests revealed that the addition of bio-oil to aging asphalt led to physical reactions, and the recycled asphalt had similar microscopic characteristics to the original asphalt. Overall, this study provides a theoretical foundation for bio-oil regeneration of asphalt and promotes its utilization in road construction.
