Air-Stable and Layer-Dependent Ferromagnetism in Atomically Thin van der Waals CrPS4

Joolee Son et al.

Summary: Ferromagnetism in two-dimensional materials, such as CrPS4, shows promise for the development of ultrathin spintronic devices with advanced functionalities. The observation of layer-dependent ferromagnetism in this air-stable van der Waals crystal suggests potential practical applications of van der Waals spintronics.

Predicting the Optical Pressure Sensitivity of 2E → 4A2 Spin-Flip Transition in Cr3+-Doped Crystals

Michele Back et al.

Summary: Understanding the role of material chemistry in increasing the pressure sensitivity of new optical pressure probes is crucial in scientific research. Ruby remains the standard pressure probe in diamond anvil cell experiments worldwide, despite being proposed almost 50 years ago. Analyzing Cr3+-based pressure sensors in terms of crystal field, nephelauxetic effect, and bulk modulus can help predict highly sensitive optical pressure sensors.

Summary: This study introduces a new model that includes an optional Racah parameter ratio to address the issue of large errors in determining Racah parameters due to uncertainties in excited-state energies. The model was successfully applied to the investigation of spectroscopic data for MgO:Cr3+ phosphor, demonstrating its potential for other 3d(3)-activated phosphor systems.

Two-dimensional bipolar ferromagnetic semiconductors from layered antiferromagnets

Jun Deng et al.

Summary: Bipolar magnetic semiconductors (BMSs) have the potential for spin current manipulation in spintronic devices using external gate voltage or chemical doping. The challenge lies in designing and searching for these materials. Monolayer CrPS4 and CrPSe4 are predicted to be bipolar ferromagnetic semiconductors that can be exfoliated from their bulk forms, with the potential to be driven into half-metals by electric-field gating. The different magnitudes between spin exchange splitting and crystal field splitting play a role in the formation of BMSs.

Summary: Heterostructures of two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides and ferromagnetic substrates show different coupling and exciton wave functions, resulting in varied responses to magnetic fields. The findings suggest g factors as a tool for investigating exciton characteristics and shedding light on the quantummechanical interplay of magnetic and optical properties.
