Exploring Chemical Kinetics at Home in Times of Pandemic: Following the Bleaching of Food Dye Allura Red Using a Smartphone

Lorean Madriz et al.

Summary: This article describes a remote experimental activity in chemical kinetics using the optical sensor of a smartphone for quantification. The objective is to empower students with tools to determine rate law parameters empirically, focusing on the bleaching reaction of food dye allura red and hypochlorite. Results show that the kinetic parameters obtained are consistent with those from more advanced equipment, demonstrating the feasibility of remote experimental activities for collecting and analyzing kinetic data during a pandemic.
