Pannexin 1 channels control the hemodynamic response to hypoxia by regulating O2-sensitive extracellular ATP in blood

Brett S. Kirby et al.

Summary: The study found that Panx1 channels participate in hypoxic vasodilation by regulating hypoxia-sensitive extracellular ATP levels in blood. Mice lacking Panx1 showed attenuated decrease in blood pressure and reduced increase in limb blood flow during hypoxia, along with lower plasma ATP levels. This indicates the important role of Panx1 in vascular responses to hypoxia.

Connexin Gap Junctions and Hemichannels Link Oxidative Stress to Skeletal Physiology and Pathology

Rui Hua et al.

Summary: Oxidative stress plays a significant role in affecting the function of connexin channels and bone loss, with increased opening of connexin hemichannels under oxidative stress conditions providing cell protection. Additionally, oxidative stress decreases osteocyte viability and impairs communication among osteocytes.

On the molecular nature of large-pore channels

Johanna Syrjanen et al.

Summary: Membrane transport plays a crucial role in controlling cellular processes, with large-pore channels serving as important conduits for ions and metabolites. These channels are formed by different protein families such as connexin, innexin, and pannexin, each contributing to diverse cellular functions.

The role of Pannexin-1 channels and extracellular ATP in the pathogenesis of the human immunodeficiency virus

Daniela D'Amico et al.

Summary: Recently, large ionic channels such as Pannexin-1 channels and Connexin hemichannels have been implicated in HIV infection and associated comorbidities. These channels are closed in healthy conditions but open in pathological conditions including HIV. Research shows that these channels play a key role in HIV infection, viral reservoir survival, and comorbidities like NeuroHIV.

Epidemiology of Trypanosomiasis in Wildlife-Implications for Humans at the Wildlife Interface in Africa

Keneth Iceland Kasozi et al.

Summary: Trypanosomiasis remains a major public health issue for both humans and animals globally, with sparse analysis on wildlife reservoir hosts. Increasing human activity and pressure on land resources are leading to higher risk of infections among wildlife, livestock, and humans. Protecting wildlife, animals, and human populations from infectious disease transmission is crucial to preserve these populations.

Pannexin 1, a large-pore membrane channel, contributes to hypotonicity-induced ATP release in Schwann cells

Zhong-Ya Wei et al.

Summary: Pannexin 1 (Panx 1) is a large-pore membrane channel highly permeable to ATP and other signaling molecules. Studies have shown its expression in the nervous system, but its distribution and function in the peripheral nervous system remains unclear. Blocking Panx 1 function pharmacologically or with RNA interference has been shown to reduce ATP release in Schwann cells, suggesting a role in regulating RhoA and cytoskeleton for ATP release.
