Enhanced Antimicrobial Action of Chlorhexidine Loaded in Shellac Nanoparticles with Cationic Surface Functionality

Saba S. M. Al-Obaidy et al.

Summary: An active nanocarrier for chlorhexidine (CHX) based on sterically stabilized shellac nanoparticles with dual surface functionalization has been developed to enhance the antimicrobial action of CHX. Surface modification, encapsulation efficiency, and release kinetics were evaluated for the novel nanocarrier, showing improved antimicrobial effects compared to free CHX on various microorganisms. The enhanced antimicrobial action was attributed to increased electrostatic adhesion between the cationic surface of the nanocarrier and the anionic surface of microorganism cell walls, potentially enabling more efficient formulations in dentistry.

Tailoring nitric oxide release with additive manufacturing to create antimicrobial surfaces

Manjyot Kaur Chug et al.

Summary: The study aims to develop bioactive polymers customized to prevent bacterial infections by combining additive manufacturing technology and the antimicrobial properties of nitric oxide (NO). The research successfully fabricated NO-releasing biocompatible polymer interfaces with tunable NO-release and demonstrated >99% reduction of viable bacteria on the surface. This combination of 3D-printing technology with NO-releasing properties shows promise in developing customized medical devices with enhanced antimicrobial properties and biocompatibility.
