Facial Nerve Repair: Bioengineering Approaches in Preclinical Models

Fuat Baris Bengur et al.

Summary: Recovery after facial nerve injury involves various management options such as primary repair, nerve grafts, or conduits, with tissue-engineered approaches increasingly studied in preclinical models and showing promising translation to clinical settings. This review comprehensively examines different recovery methods after facial nerve injury in preclinical models, providing insights into current developments and future directions for researchers to expand the field of tissue engineering and facial nerve recovery.

Mechanical performance of collagen gels is dependent on purity, α1/α2 ratio, and telopeptides

Leigh Slyker et al.

Summary: This study investigates the compositional, mechanical, and structural differences between collagen gels sourced from different origins and processed using different methods. It was found that gel mechanics and gelation kinetics varied significantly depending on the collagen source and processing method, with differences correlating with variations in composition. Results showed that telopeptide-containing collagens had higher storage modulus and faster gelation compared to atelocollagens, despite lower purity levels.

Evaluation of Functional Recovery in Rats After Median Nerve Resection and Autograft Repair Using Computerized Gait Analysis

Johannes C. Heinzel et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that computerized gait analysis is a valid and feasible method for evaluating functional recovery following autograft repair of the rat median nerve. Parameters such as Print Area, Duty Cycle, and Stand Index were identified for assessing nerve regeneration. External paw rotation was also identified as a valid parameter for evaluating motor reinnervation.

Machine Learning Models for Predicting Facial Nerve Palsy in Parotid Gland Surgery for Benign Tumors

Carlos Miguel Chiesa-Estomba et al.

Summary: Machine learning algorithms, such as K-nearest neighbor and random forest, showed promising results in predicting the risk of facial nerve injury after parotid gland surgery. This can provide valuable evidence-based predictions for otolaryngologists and patients, enabling them to make more informed decisions before surgery.

In Situ Synthesized Selenium Nanoparticles-Decorated Bacterial Cellulose/Gelatin Hydrogel with Enhanced Antibacterial, Antioxidant, and Anti-Inflammatory Capabilities for Facilitating Skin Wound Healing

Lin Mao et al.

Summary: The multifunctional nanocomposite hydrogels based on bacterial cellulose, gelatin, and selenium nanoparticles showed excellent antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory capabilities, as well as promising wound healing performance in a rat full-thickness defect model. The hydrogels demonstrated superior mechanical properties, good swelling ability, flexibility, biodegradability, and biocompatibility, making them a great potential wound dressing for preventing infection and accelerating skin regeneration in clinic.

Scar tissue removal-activated endogenous neural stem cells aid Taxol-modified collagen scaffolds in repairing chronic long-distance transected spinal cord injury

Wen Yin et al.

Summary: Surgical removal of scar tissue combined with biomaterial implantation has shown to be effective in repairing chronic transected spinal cord injury. This study found that activating endogenous neural stem cells around the injured site during the first scar tissue removal surgery and promoting their differentiation into neurons induced by Taxol may contribute to functional recovery in canines. This suggests that the combination of LOCS + Taxol implantation with the first scar tissue removal provides a promising therapy for repairing chronic long-distance transected SCI.

A multifunctional substance P-conjugated chitosan hydrochloride hydrogel accelerates full-thickness wound healing by enhancing synchronized vascularization, extracellular matrix deposition, and nerve regeneration

Hao Li et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that the SP-conjugated chitosan hydrochloride hydrogel (CSCl-SP) enhances the repair of full-thickness skin defects by providing a stable in vitro delivery system for substance P (SP). CSCl-SP promotes cell proliferation, migration, tube formation, angiogenesis, and nerve regeneration. Through in vivo experiments, CSCl-SP significantly improves vascularization, extracellular matrix deposition and remodeling, and efficient recovery of full-thickness skin defects, making it a promising material for severe skin defects.
