Piezoelectric Nylon-11 Fibers for Electronic Textiles, Energy Harvesting and Sensing

Saleem Anwar et al.

Summary: Nylon fibers, widely used in textiles, have been difficult to achieve in electronic textiles due to the challenge of achieving the piezoelectric phase; however, piezoelectric nylon-11 fibers have now been demonstrated with potential applications in energy harvesting and motion sensors. A simulation study elucidated the sensitivity of these fibers to mechanical stimuli, and a strategy has been proposed and validated to significantly boost electrical performance. Demonstrating piezoelectric nylon fibers is a major step towards realizing electronic textiles for applications in apparel, health monitoring, sportswear, and portable energy generation.

Design and fabrication of flexible strain sensor based on ZnO-decorated PVDF via atomic layer deposition

Chao Sun et al.

Summary: Introducing patterned sensors onto polymer substrates has been considered a promising method to manufacture multifunctional and integrated flexible sensors for wearable devices. By utilizing PVDF as the polymer substrate and employing a low activity plasma pretreatment, the deposition of the piezoresistive ZnO nanolayer resulted in high performance strain sensors capable of accurately detecting very low strains. Leveraging the low chemical activity of PVDF, patterned deposition of ZnO was easily achieved, allowing for the design of different wearable sensors and the fabrication of array-style sensors for in-situ position detection under loading.

Self-Poled Sausage-Like PVDF Nanowires Produced by Confined Phase Inversion as Novel Piezoelectric Nanogenerators

Hosna Soleymani et al.

Summary: Piezoelectric PVDF nanowires are highly sensitive to small vibrations, making them ideal for energy harvesting. A new method combining template-wetting and anisotropic solvent-nonsolvent phase inversion has been developed to produce PVDF nanowires with significantly enhanced power output. Numerical simulations show that the sausage-like nano-generators increase power density by 280%, with finite element modeling explaining the enhancement in piezoelectric performance due to the higher deformability of these structures.
