Tuning chemical precompression: Theoretical design and crystal chemistry of novel hydrides in the quest for warm and light superconductivity at ambient pressures

Katerina P. Hilleke et al.

Summary: In the past decade, the phase diagrams of binary hydrides under pressure have been thoroughly explored through a combination of crystal structure prediction techniques and experimental synthetic work. This dual approach has led to the identification of several superconducting hydrides with high T(c)s, approaching room temperature. The stability and superconducting properties of these phases, as well as the potential of ternary hydride phases, are discussed.

High-Pressure Mg-Sc-H Phase Diagram and Its Superconductivity from First-Principles Calculations

Peng Song et al.

Summary: In this work, a global search for crystal structures of ternary MgScH hydrides (MgxScyHz) under high pressure was performed using the evolutionary algorithm and first-principles calculations. The thermodynamic convex hull and pressure-dependent phase diagram of MgxScyHz for a wide range of compositions were computed. No stable compounds were found in the hydrogen-rich range, while four thermodynamically stable compounds with superconductivity were identified in the hydrogen-middle range.

Design Principles for High-Temperature Superconductors with a Hydrogen-Based Alloy Backbone at Moderate Pressure

Zihan Zhang et al.

Summary: Hydrogen-based superconductors offer a way to achieve room-temperature superconductivity, but their immediate application is limited by the high pressures required. This study proposes a strategy for designing high-temperature superconductors at low pressures by alloying small-radius elements and hydrogen to form ternary H-based superconductors with alloy backbones.

The Systematic Study on the Stability and Superconductivity of Y-Mg-H Compounds under High Pressure

Peng Song et al.

Summary: Using crystal search and first-principle calculations, multiple high-pressure YMgHx phases were discovered, some of which exhibit high superconducting transition temperatures (Tc). It was found that H-rich phases have higher Tc due to larger H-driven electronic and phonon density of states, as well as larger electron-phonon coupling strength.

Synthesis of Yttrium Superhydride Superconductor with a Transition Temperature up to 262 K by Catalytic Hydrogenation at High Pressures

Elliot Snider et al.

Summary: The recent observation of room-temperature superconductivity is expected to drive the discovery of new, dense, hydrogen-rich materials, including rare earth metal superhydrides. A study reported the synthesis of a yttrium superhydride that exhibits superconductivity at a critical temperature of 262 K at 182 ± 8 GPa, with the assistance of a palladium thin film. It was found that the phonon-mediated superconductivity is established by the observation of zero resistance, an isotope effect, and the reduction of T-c under an external magnetic field, with the upper critical magnetic field at 103 T at zero temperature.

Prediction of high-Tc superconductivity in ternary lanthanum borohydrides

Xiaowei Liang et al.

Summary: The study explores crystal structures and superconductivity in the La-B-H system under pressure using particle-swarm intelligence structure-searches methods and first-principles calculations. The research predicts that LaBH7 and LaBH8 can become dynamically stable and exhibit superconductivity at lower pressures. These results provide guidance for future experiments targeting hydride superconductors with lower synthesis pressures and higher T-c.

LaBH8: Towards high-Tc low-pressure superconductivity in ternary superhydrides

Simone Di Cataldo et al.

Summary: In this paper, a new high-Tc hydride superconductor, LaBH8, is computationally predicted to have a Tc of 126 K at a pressure of 50 GPa, making it thermodynamically stable above 100 GPa and dynamically stable down to 40 GPa. LaBH8's unique structure, a ternary sodalite-like hydride, is stabilized by a metallic hydrogen sublattice supported by La-B scaffolding, allowing for a more efficient packing of atoms than in binary sodalite hydrides due to the combination of elements of different sizes.

High-pressure synthesis and thermodynamic stability of PdH1±ε up to 8 GPa

Zachary M. Geballe et al.

Summary: Palladium hydride alloys, synthesized by compressing Pd in a hydrogen-rich environment, exhibit nonmonotonic changes in unit cell volume with pressure, reaching a maximum volume at 1 GPa due to progressive hydrogenation. The [H]: [Pd] ratio increases to a maximum at 2 GPa, suggesting that PdH1 +/-epsilon is in thermodynamic equilibrium with pure H-2 at room temperature.
