Dislocation Mechanics of Extremely High Rate Deformations in Iron and Tantalum

M. A. Shehadeh et al.

Summary: High strain rate simulations were conducted using the MDDP method on alpha-iron and tantalum crystals, revealing the impact of rise time on plastic relaxation and indicating relatively weak shock behavior with even a small rise time. Comparisons were made with TASRA, phonon drag, and dislocation-generation predictions.

The mechanics and physics of high-speed dislocations: a critical review

Benat Gurrutxaga-Lerma et al.

Summary: High speed dislocations have long been identified as the dominant feature governing the plastic response of crystalline materials under high strain rates. Despite decades of study, their role in materials response remains elusive. This article reviews experimental and theoretical efforts to address this issue, focusing on the competing theoretical accounts, their underlying hypothesis, insights, and shortcomings, with suggestions for key developments in future research.

Adaptive domain misorientation approach for the EBSD measurement of deformation induced dislocation sub-structures

Pauli Lehto

Summary: A novel domain misorientation approach is introduced in the current work, which can resolve sub-grains and dislocation cells using conventional EBSD, leading to an increase in level of detail resolved. The method grows measurement domains radially until a specified misorientation value has been reached, enabling local misorientation analysis within individual sub-grains and dislocation cells. Sub-structural boundaries are classified based on the total misorientation, with thickness ranging from approximately one hundred nanometres to several hundred nanometres.

A unified mechanics theory-based model for temperature and strain rate dependent proportionality limit stress of mild steel

Noushad M. Bin Jamal et al.

Summary: This study investigates the strain rate and temperature dependent elastic limit of mild steel through the development of a dislocation incipient motion-based proportionality limit stress model. It is found that dislocation incipient motion within the elastic limit is dominated by inertial effects, rather than drag controlled mechanisms. The micromechanics of rate and temperature dependence of the elastic response of mild steel involve an inertia dominated mechanism at higher temperatures.
