Dietary fibre in gastrointestinal health and disease

Samantha K. Gill et al.

Summary: Dietary fiber has been shown to benefit gastrointestinal health through consumption of unrefined whole foods. Studies have demonstrated that dietary fiber can regulate gut and microbial effects, with important implications for gastrointestinal disorders.

Bifidobacterium pseudocatenulatum Ameliorates DSS-Induced Colitis by Maintaining Intestinal Mechanical Barrier, Blocking Proinflammatory Cytokines, Inhibiting TLR4/NF-κB Signaling, and Altering Gut Microbiota

Yang Chen et al.

Summary: This study found that supplementation with B. pseudocatenulatum strains MY40C and CCFM680 alleviated DSS-induced colitis by protecting the intestinal mechanical barrier, modulating gut microbiota, blocking proinflammatory cytokines, and inhibiting the TLR4/NF-kappa B pathway.

Chemical structure, concentration, and pH are key factors influencing antimicrobial activity of conjugated bile acids against lactobacilli

Xue-Jiao Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of chemical structure, concentration, and pH on the antimicrobial activity of conjugated bile acids against lactobacilli. Different bile acid components showed varying antimicrobial activity, with glycodeoxycholic acid and glycochenodeoxycholic acid exhibiting higher activity. Concentration and pH were found to play key roles in determining the antimicrobial activity of bile acids, providing theoretical guidance for evaluating the bile tolerance ability of potentially probiotic lactobacilli strains.

Sex, Food, and the Gut Microbiota: Disparate Response to Caloric Restriction Diet with Fiber Supplementation in Women and Men

Alfonso Benitez-Paez et al.

Summary: This study examines the synergistic effects of caloric restriction intervention with fiber supplementation using a multivariate multi-omics approach. The results suggest that diet-microbe-host interactions play a key role in personalized interventions, and underscore the importance of considering sex-specific effects in future studies on dietary interventions efficacy. In conclusion, the study reveals that the dietary intervention is more beneficial for women than men.

Microbial Regulation of Host Physiology by Short-chain Fatty Acids

Bart van der Hee et al.

Summary: The ancestral diet had more fiber, while modern society's diet lacks it. SCFAs produced by gut bacteria fermenting fiber play a crucial role in intestinal homeostasis and the pathophysiology of human diseases. SCFAs can also impact tissues and organs beyond the gut through blood circulation, inducing epigenetic changes in the genome.

Summary: The study evaluated gut microbial dysbiosis and its relationship with gut-produced metabolites in dogs with MMVD. The dysbiosis index was positively associated with disease severity and negatively correlated with specific bacteria, impacting circulating metabolites and disease progression.

Effects of dietary macronutrient profile on apparent total tract macronutrient digestibility and fecal microbiota, fermentative metabolites, and bile acids of female dogs after spay surgery

Thunyaporn Phungviwatnikul et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that high-protein, high-fiber diets can alter nutrient and energy digestibilities, fecal metabolite concentrations, and fecal gut microbiota in dogs. However, the effects of spay surgery were found to be minor in comparison. Additional research is needed to understand how factors such as food intake, nutrient profile, and changes in hormone production affect the gut microbiota and metabolites of dogs on an individual basis.

Caloric restriction disrupts the microbiota and colonization resistance

Reiner Jumpertz von Schwartzenberg et al.

Summary: This study highlights the significant impact of diet on shaping the gut microbiome and influencing host metabolism. Restriction of calories led to changes in bacterial abundance and microbial composition, affecting nutrient absorption and resulting in metabolic phenotypes in mice. Further research is needed to understand the complex interactions between diet, microbiome, and host health.

Taxonomic Characterization and Short-Chain Fatty Acids Production of the Obese Microbiota

M. Carmen Martinez-Cuesta et al.

Summary: Intestinal microbiota plays a key role in obesity, and the composition and metabolic activity of obese-associated microbiota were assessed through massive sequencing and in vitro incubation. The richness and diversity of microbiota did not differ significantly between obese and normoweight individuals, but certain bacterial types were enriched or diminished in obese participants. Short-chain fatty acids content was higher in obese individuals, with differences in acetate, propionate, and butyrate production between obese and normoweight microbiotas.
