Summary: With global change leading to an increase in extreme disturbance events worldwide, understanding how animals respond to acute disturbances, like wildfires, is crucial. A study on black-tailed deer's behavior post-Mendocino Complex Fire in Northern California showed that despite a decrease in vegetation post-fire, the deer maintained site fidelity to pre-fire ranges, exhibited increased activity, and selected for surviving vegetation and woodland habitat within their home ranges. The study highlights the importance of studying large mammals' responses to disturbances as such events become more frequent and severe globally.
