Identification of Cameroon's geological structures through a gravity separation and using seismic crustal models

Franck Eitel Kemgang Ghomsi et al.

Summary: Residual gravity data provide important information for geophysical interpretation of geological sources, but challenges exist in accurately reflecting the actual geological composition and issues inherent to gravity inversion methods. The use of forward modeling based on seismic crustal structure models can help separate residual gravity signals from observed data to more realistically interpret detailed geological and tectonic features.

Insights on the tectonic styles of the Red Sea rift using gravity and magnetic data

Saada Ahmed Saada et al.

Summary: This study analyzed global topography, bathymetry, magnetic, and gravity data to study the nature of the Red Sea crust, indicating it as a classic example of incipient ocean basin formation after continent breakup. Spectral analysis and 2D forward modeling were used to image crustal sources within the Red Sea, with profiles constructed across the southern, central, and northern portions to determine crustal structural differences. Residual and regional gravity anomaly maps show large gravity maxima over the main axial trough in the central and southern Red Sea due to molten material intrusion, while discontinuous oceanic crust in the central portion implies a transition zone. In the northern Red Sea, discontinuous gravity maxima and high frequency magnetic anomalies suggest the last stage of continental rifting and beginning of seafloor spreading.

An improved approach for detecting ridge locations to interpret the potential field data for more accurate structural mapping: A case study from Vredefort dome area (South Africa)

Luan Thanh Pham et al.

Summary: Approximating boundaries of causative sources is crucial in potential field interpretation. Different methods, including derivative and phase-based, have been proposed, but they have limitations such as equalizing signal amplitudes or producing false edges. This study introduces an improved method to locate peaks in the data, which demonstrates higher precision and detail compared to traditional methods.

Subsurface structural mapping from high-resolution gravity data using advanced processing methods

Summary: The study area with a complex geological structure was investigated using geophysical techniques to map density interfaces, while neglecting the mapping of geological structures such as contacts and faults visible in gravity data as lineaments. Through modern processing methods like HGA, THGA, and EHGA, the study delineated lineaments trending mainly in the NW-SE direction and some in the WE direction in the southeastern region, providing new insights into the structural framework and tectonic setting of the Thua Thien Hue area.
