Further insights into the phylogeny of peniculid ciliates (Ciliophora, Oligohymenophorea) based on multigene data

Meng Sun et al.

Summary: The study reports 27 new sequences of Peniculids, including 18S rRNA, ITS1-5.8SITS2 rRNA, 28S rRNA, and cox1 genes. The findings show that subclass Peniculia and family Parameciidae are monophyletic, while the Urocentrida family ranks as a subclass within Peniculia, in agreement with previous classifications. Additionally, discrepancies regarding genus Frontonia were identified, leading to proposals for revised species diagnoses.

Phylogeny of Neobursaridium reshapes the systematics of Paramecium (Oligohymenophorea, Ciliophora)

Valentina Serra et al.

Summary: This study explores the phylogenetic relationships within the subclass Peniculia, focusing on the molecular characterization of a less studied ciliate, Neobursaridium gigas. Unexpectedly, the inclusion of N. gigas's molecular data did not clarify the evolutionary relationships inside Peniculia, but rather raised intriguing questions about Paramecium phylogeny, suggesting N. gigas may belong to the Paramecium genus.

Characterization and Comparative Analyses of Mitochondrial Genomes in Single-Celled Eukaryotes to Shed Light on the Diversity and Evolution of Linear Molecular Architecture

Tengteng Zhang et al.

Summary: Determining and comparing complete mitochondrial genomes of unicellular protists provide important insights into the origin and evolution of mitochondria. The mitochondrial genomes of ciliates are gene-rich and display high structural diversity, with newly sequenced ciliate mitogenomes showing unique characteristics and insights into mitogenome evolution. Comparisons and phylogenetic analyses reveal important differences in molecular architecture, replication origin, and gene content among ciliate species, ultimately contributing to a deeper understanding of their diversity and evolution.

The neotypification of Frontonia vernalis (Ehrenberg, 1833) Ehrenberg, 1838 and the description of Frontonia paravernalis sp. nov. trigger a critical revision of frontoniid systematics

Valentina Serra et al.

Summary: This study provides the neotypification of F. vernalis found in Italy, as well as a multidisciplinary description and neotype material. A new species, Frontonia paravernalis sp. nov., bearing Chlorella-like endosymbionts, was also described in Italy and Russia. A critical discussion on Frontonia taxonomy and phylogeny was presented based on 18S rDNA sequencing. With the neotypification of F. vernalis and F. leucas, a significant step in Frontonia systematics was achieved.

Large-scale phylogenomic analysis provides new insights into the phylogeny of the class Oligohymenophorea (Protista, Ciliophora) with establishment of a new subclass Urocentria nov. subcl

Chundi Wang et al.

Summary: This study sequenced the genomes and/or transcriptomes of six non-culturable oligohymenophoreans using single-cell sequencing techniques. Phylogenomic analysis with expanded taxon sampling of 85 taxa revealed the evolutionary relationships within Oligohymenophorea and proposed new classifications for Urocentrids and Paranassula. The study also provided insights into the early divergence of Peritrichia and the evolutionary usage of stop codons among oligohymenophoreans.
