Shortfall in stroke care: A study of ischaemic stroke care practices in a South African metropole

V Mandizvidza et al.

Summary: The study found varying levels of adherence to the South African stroke guideline in level 1, 2, and 3 hospitals in the Cape Metro Health District. Challenges such as difficulties in transferring patients to higher levels of care, limited access to stroke management protocols, inadequate stroke education among health professionals, and delays in patients receiving medical attention were identified as major barriers to optimal stroke patient care. Monitoring systems for continuous evaluation of the quality of acute and post-acute stroke services are necessary to address these issues.
