Aging behavior and strengthening mechanisms of coarsening resistant metastable θ′ precipitates in an Al-Cu alloy

Sumit Bahl et al.

Summary: An Al-Cu alloy micro-alloyed with Mn and Zr (ACMZ) was studied to understand the thermal stability and strengthening mechanism of metastable theta'-Al2Cu precipitates with interfacial segregation. It was found that the theta' precipitates did not exhibit measurable coarsening after thermal exposure at 300 degrees C for 5000 h, likely due to the kinetic effects of Mn and Zr interfacial segregation dominating over thermodynamic effects.

Experimental and modelling assessment of ductility in a precipitation hardening AlMgScZr alloy

Han Chen et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of precipitation on ductility in precipitation hardening aluminium alloys. The results showed that the ductility decreases when shearable precipitates occur, and increases with shearable precipitates being replaced by nonshearable precipitates. The variation in ductility is mainly controlled by the dynamic recovery rate of the dislocations.

Modeling peak-aged precipitate strengthening in Al-Mg-Si alloys

Yi Hu et al.

Summary: Strengthening in Al-Mg-Si alloys by needle-shaped beta'' precipitates is crucial, with computational studies showing that Orowan looping only sets an upper bound for the CRSS even at peak aging. Further quantitative progress in understanding the strengthening mechanism requires detailed modeling of precipitate shearing.
