Emerging Nanomedicines for the Treatment of Atopic Dermatitis

Khushali Parekh et al.

Summary: Globally, the prevalence of Atopic dermatitis (AD) is increasing, with a complex pathogenesis involving epidermal barrier function, environment, infectious agents, and immunological defects. Traditional treatments have limitations, prompting research into innovative nanomedicines for effective drug delivery to diseased skin sites. However, challenges remain in developing non-toxic formulations and clinically translating established nanomedicines into accessible products. Various carrier formulations are emerging in this evolving field.

Microfluidic assembly of pomegranate-like hierarchical microspheres for efflux regulation in oral drug delivery

Aun Raza et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a multi-functional nano-in-micro hierarchical microsphere system for controlling intestinal efflux pumps affecting the oral bioavailability of therapeutic drugs. The innovative materials combination allows for high loading of hydrophilic drugs while protecting them and reducing efflux with Eudragit (R) polymers. The prepared formulations significantly improve drug bioavailability and retain antibacterial activity against common pathogens.

Can mesoporous nanoparticles promote bioavailability of topical pharmaceutics?

Sabrina Valetti et al.

Summary: Research has shown that porous particles of appropriate size and porosity can accumulate in hair follicles and furrows on the skin, providing a potential area for drug delivery. The combination of follicle orifices and furrows can cover up to 20% of the skin surface, making them valuable for optimizing bioavailability of topical formulations. This work highlights the potential of skin furrows for topical drug delivery.

One-Pot Synthesis of pH-Responsive Eudragit-Mesoporous Silica Nanocomposites Enable Colonic Delivery of Glucocorticoids for the Treatment of Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Zhi Qu et al.

Summary: The study proposes a smart drug delivery system using functionalized mesoporous silica nanoparticles and pH-responsive polymer to improve the release efficiency and reduce systemic side effects of oral glucocorticoids. Results show that this system can release drugs at colonic pH and demonstrate therapeutic efficacy in a mouse colitis model. Coated nanoparticles significantly decrease cytokine expression in the proximal colon, indicating colonic delivery effectiveness.
