New Insight into the Fluorescence Quenching of Nitrogen-Containing Carbonaceous Quantum Dots-From Surface Chemistry to Biomedical Applications

Marek Wisniewski et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the stable fluorescent properties of biocompatible nitrogen-containing carbon quantum dots and the mechanism of fluorescence quenching in cells, demonstrating experimentally that reduced NADH acts as a quencher within cells and elucidating the process of functional group transformation on carbon quantum dots' surface due to redox reactions. Understanding these mechanisms will aid in accurately dosing and quantifying the internalized carbon quantum dots for biomedical applications.

Self-Targeting of Carbon Dots into the Cell Nucleus: Diverse Mechanisms of Toxicity in NIH/3T3 and L929 Cells

Marketa Havrdova et al.

Summary: The study reveals that QCDs can penetrate the cell nucleus and exhibit concentration-dependent effects internally. QCDs have different impacts on NIH/3T3 and L929 cells, with the former experiencing changes in cell cycle profile and the latter leading to cellular death. Additionally, the presence of QCDs in the nucleus affects the intranuclear environment and causes fluorescence blue shifts.

Quaternized carbon-based nanoparticles embedded positively charged composite membranes towards efficient removal of cationic small-sized contaminants

Yuefei Song et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the feasibility and effectiveness of using novel thin-film nanocomposite membranes for the efficient removal of series of cationic small-sized contaminants in aqueous solution. By doping modification, the membrane properties are significantly improved, leading to enhanced removal rates for different types of contaminants with increased membrane permeability and fouling resistance. Ultimately, the modified TFN membranes offer sustainable and efficient options for treating cationic small-sized contaminants in one step.

Carbon dots with positive surface charge from tartaric acid and m-aminophenol for selective killing of Gram-positive bacteria

Huibo Wang et al.

Summary: Gram-positive bacteria are common pathogens causing severe infections, and hospital infections caused by them have increased significantly. Abusing antibiotics has led to dangerous drug resistance, prompting the development of cationic carbon dots with high antibacterial efficiency. These CDs with positive surface charge can selectively kill Gram-positive bacteria and have potential as alternative antibacterial agents.
