Glycoconjugated Metal Complexes as Cancer Diagnostic and Therapeutic Agents

Giulia Bononi et al.

Summary: The article discusses the potential of delivering metal complexes selectively to cancer cells based on their metabolic characteristics through conjugation with carbohydrate portions. These compounds have a wide range of possible applications in diagnosis and therapy, including nuclear medicine techniques such as PET, SPECT, and MRI. By conjugating metal-based chemotherapeutic agents with carbohydrate portions, the issue of lack of selective cytotoxicity exhibited by some metal-based agents can be addressed.

Redox and apoptotic potential of novel ruthenium complexes in rat blood and heart

Katarina Mihajlovic et al.

Summary: Ruthenium complexes show lower potential for induction of oxidative stress-mediated cardiotoxicity compared with cisplatin. In heart tissues, systemic and cardiac pro-oxidative markers were significantly lower in ruthenium groups, while concentrations of antioxidative parameters were significantly higher. Furthermore, ruthenium administration led to significantly lower gene expression of Box and caspase-3 in the hearts.

New approaches for targeting platinum-resistant ovarian cancer

Michelle McMullen et al.

Summary: Platinum drugs are crucial in ovarian cancer treatment, but resistance is a major challenge, with complex mechanisms involving both intracellular and microenvironment factors. Clinical trials are essential for improving outcomes, and future research should focus on understanding the biology of the disease and enhancing quality of life and survival for patients.

Ruthenium Half-Sandwich Type Complexes with Bidentate Monosaccharide Ligands Show Antineoplastic Activity in Ovarian Cancer Cell Models through Reactive Oxygen Species Production

Istvan Kacsir et al.

Summary: Ruthenium complexes have been developed as alternatives to platinum complexes for the treatment of hematological and gynecological malignancies, showing cytostatic effects on various cancer cell models. These active complexes demonstrated cooperative binding to cellular targets, dependent on reactive oxygen species production. The cytostatic activity of ruthenium complexes was enhanced by the PARP inhibitor Rucaparib.

Metal complexes against breast cancer stem cells

Yingsi Li et al.

Summary: Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths among women globally, with tumor metastasis and the presence of CSCs contributing significantly to high mortality rates. Research needs to focus on discovering effective anticancer agents that can inhibit the proliferation of differentiated tumor cells and reduce the tumorigenic capability of CSCs.

Anticancer Half-Sandwich Rhodium(III) Complexes

Klaudia Malikova et al.

Summary: Platinum-based anticancer drugs have led to the development of ruthenium and rhodium compounds with potential anticancer activity, with rhodium complexes showing promising in vitro potency as alternatives to conventional platinum and ruthenium-based metallodrugs. The review focuses on half-sandwich Rh(III) complexes, which exhibit higher in vitro potency and different mechanisms of action compared to cisplatin or clinically studied Ru drug candidates. Additionally, some of the discussed Rh(III) arenyl complexes have shown anticancer activity in vivo, highlighting the potential of organorhodium compounds in anticancer therapies.
