The long-term effects of γ-radiation on the growth of Allium cepa plants

Alexander Bolsunovsky et al.

Summary: The study found that short-term gamma-irradiation of onion seedlings (absorbed doses of 0.1-10 Gy) caused inhibition of plant growth 6 and 10 days after irradiation. Root length of onion seedlings showed a linear dose dependence, with low-dose radiation also inducing long-term negative effects on plant growth.

Combined ultraviolet and darkness regulation of medicinal metabolites in Mahonia bealei revealed by proteomics and metabolomics

Wei Zhu et al.

Summary: Roots of Mahonia bealei have been traditionally used in Chinese medicine due to their antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties. This study found that UV-B combined with dark treatment can enhance the production of alkaloids and flavonoids in the leaves of M. bealei, involving multi-hormone crosstalk, enhanced tricarboxylic acid cycle, and active calcium signaling. These findings provide insights into utilizing the leaves and understanding the functions of secondary metabolites in M. bealei.

Hormesis effects of gamma radiation on growth of quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa)

Ki Eun Song et al.

Summary: This study investigated the hormesis effect of gamma-ray on quinoa by irradiating seeds with different doses and analyzing the growth and physiological parameters. Results showed that low-dose gamma irradiation at 50 Gy led to increased plant height, biomass, and photosynthetic ability compared to control and higher doses treatments. Various hyperspectral vegetation indices were also higher in plants treated with 50 Gy irradiation, indicating hormesis occurs at this radiation level.

Integrative omic analysis reveals the improvement of alkaloid accumulation by ultraviolet-B radiation and its upstream regulation in Catharanthus roseus

Zhuoheng Zhong et al.

Summary: Indole alkaloids from Catharanthus roseus are influenced by ultraviolet B radiation, which triggers changes in leaf mitochondria leading to increased ATP production and the accumulation of various alkaloids. Proteomic and metabolomic analyses revealed upregulation of ATP export, mitochondrial complexes II/IV, and geranylgeranyl pyrophosphate synthase, while downregulation of proteins related to mitochondrial complex I and metabolism of glutamate and tyrosine under UVB radiation. These changes ensure ATP production and facilitate the biosynthesis of alkaloids.

Proteomic and Biochemical Analyses of the Mechanism of Tolerance in Mutant Soybean Responding to Flooding Stress

Setsuko Komatsu et al.

Summary: The research investigated the flooding tolerance mechanism of soybean by crossing flooding-tolerant mutants derived from gamma-ray irradiated soybean with the parent cultivar Enrei. The mutant lines showed better growth under flooding conditions compared to the wild type. Proteomic analysis revealed differences in protein abundance related to endoplasmic reticulum between the wild type and mutant lines under flooding stress.

Setsuko Komatsu et al.

Summary: Millimeter-wave irradiation has positive effects on chickpea growth and tolerance to flooding stress, improving recovery of plant growth through regulation of photosynthesis and fermentation. Cell death regulation under flooding may play a role in promoting chickpea tolerance with millimeter-wave irradiation.
