Photoluminescent NaGdF4@NaYF4:Ce/Tb inert-core/active-shell nanoparticles for selective and ultra-sensitive Cu2+ions sensing

Yubin Wang et al.

Summary: A novel photoluminescent probe was developed using inert-core/active-shell nanoparticles for the selective and ultra-sensitive detection of Cu2+ ions in aqueous solution, achieving a detection limit as low as 3.5*10-10 M. By confining sensitizer/activator (Ce/Tb) within a thin shell layer, the interaction between Ce/Tb and Cu2+ ions was strengthened, leading to improved sensing performance for Cu2+ ions. The decreased energy transfer possibility from Ce3+ to Tb3+ after the adsorption of Cu2+ ions activated the sensing capability of the probe.
