The role of connexin proteins and their channels in radiation-induced atherosclerosis

Raghda Ramadan et al.

Summary: Radiation therapy is effective in treating breast cancer and other thoracic tumors, but can lead to secondary cardiovascular diseases due to radiation exposure of the heart and large arteries. Radiation-induced coronary artery atherosclerosis is a major cardiovascular complication in thoracic radiotherapy-treated patients, with complex biological and molecular mechanisms that are not fully understood. Ionizing radiation exposure can damage the vascular endothelium, leading to atherosclerosis through various mechanisms such as DNA damage, oxidative stress, cellular senescence, and inflammation.

An Update on Connexin Gap Junction and Hemichannels in Diabetic Retinopathy

Jorge Gonzalez-Casanova et al.

Summary: Diabetic retinopathy is a major cause of vision loss in the working age population, characterized by progressive deterioration of retinal microvasculature due to long-term metabolic changes. Gap junction channels and connexin hemichannels have been identified as key factors in the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy. Understanding the physiological impact of diabetes on these channels and their role in the disease process could lead to the development of novel pharmacological interventions.

Summary: Treatment with αCT1 leads to decreased alignment of collagen fibers in scars, resembling unwounded skin. The histological structure of scars treated with αCT1 differs significantly from the control group. Similar effects of αCT1 were observed in animal models as well.

Activation of Cx43 Hemichannels Induces the Generation of Ca2+ Oscillations in White Adipocytes and Stimulates Lipolysis

Egor A. Turovsky et al.

Summary: The study investigated the mechanisms of Ca2+ oscillation generation and regulation of the lipolysis/lipogenesis balance in white adipocytes in response to a decrease in extracellular calcium concentration. It was found that activation of connexin-43 led to ATP release from adipocytes, causing changes in gene expression related to lipolysis and a decrease in lipid droplet accumulation.

Atrial Fibrillation and Obesity Reverse Remodeling of Atrial Substrate With Weight Reduction

Rajiv Mahajan et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effect of weight loss on the atrial substrate for atrial fibrillation in sheep with sustained obesity. Weight loss of 30% was associated with structural and electrophysiological reverse remodeling and reduced propensity for AF. These findings suggest the direct role of obesity in AF substrate and the potential benefit of weight reduction in patients with AF.
