Neutron Radiobiology and Dosimetry

Daniela L. Stricklin et al.

Summary: This article discusses the need to consider individuals' exposure to neutron radiation as the U.S. prepares for radiological or nuclear incidents and anticipated lunar and Mars missions. More information is needed on determining neutron dose in order to better estimate the true biological effects of neutrons and mixed-field radiation exposures. A cross-agency working group was formed to host a workshop on Neutron Radiobiology and Dosimetry, highlighting stakeholder interests and presenting current research in various fields related to neutron exposure.

Towards the characterization of neutron carcinogenesis through direct action simulations of clustered DNA damage

Logan Montgomery et al.

Summary: The study examined the neutron RBE for inducing complex DSB clusters and non-DSB clusters, finding that they exhibit similar energy dependence to the canonical neutron RBE for stochastic radiobiological effects. Results suggest that various types of clustered DNA damage contribute to the energy dependence of neutron RBE for stochastic radiobiological effects, highlighting the importance of considering the size and constituent lesions of individual clusters in modeling DNA repair.

Relative Biological Effectiveness and Non-Poissonian Distribution of Dicentric Chromosome Aberrations following Californium-252 Neutron Exposures of Human Peripheral Blood Lymphocytes

Laura C. Paterson et al.

Summary: The study investigated the characteristics of chromosome aberrations in lymphocytes exposed to low doses of Cf-252 spectrum neutrons, showing that even at low doses, chromosome aberration clustering can be observed. RBEM values for neutron-plus-photon and neutron-only dose components were found to be 15.0 +/- 2.2 and 25.7 +/- 3.8, respectively.
