Genome-wide identification and expression analyses of homeodomain-leucine zipper family genes reveal their involvement in stress response in apple (Malus ? domestica)

Quanyan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study identified 83 HD-Zip genes in the apple genome and classified them into four subgroups. Analysis of promoter regions revealed elements related to stress response and plant hormones. Quantitative reverse transcription-PCR analysis showed that some MdHDZ genes exhibited different expression patterns under salt, drought, low temperature, and ABA stresses. The study further demonstrated that MdHDZ3 played an important role in the response to salt, low temperature, and ABA stresses in apple.

Russ Monson and the evolution of C4 photosynthesis

Rowan F. Sage

Summary: Russ Monson's early influential eco-physiological papers laid the foundation for the study of C-4 plant evolution. His model on the evolutionary bridge from C-3 to C-4 photosynthesis, along with critical reviews on C-4 evolution, heavily influenced the modern synthesis of C-4 evolutionary studies. Subsequent research supported his model and expanded our understanding of the physiological controls and fitness value of C-3, C-3-C-4 intermediate, and C-4 photosynthesis.
