Summary: This study reported the assembly of the buckwheat genome using long-read technology and a high-resolution expression atlas, revealing the high content of transposable elements in the buckwheat genome. The difference in TE content was found to be a major factor contributing to the increase in genome size of buckwheat. Additionally, differences in TE content between wild ancestral subspecies and cultivars were detected, suggesting TE activity accompanied buckwheat domestication.
